Synopsis
Understanding Medjugorje is an in-depth investigation into some of the most surprising, but also most influential, spiritual phenomena to have affected modern Catholicism. Millions of people have visited the site of the alleged visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Medjugorje, despite the fact that they have received no official Church approval. Understanding Medjugorje will help readers to understand how important Church figures, including Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Ratzinger-now Pope Benedict XVI-have actually viewed Medjugorje. It also looks at the role of influential priests and theologians in promoting Medjugorje, and the tangled historical and religious background to the visions. Similarly, it deals with the links between the visions, the Charismatic Renewal, and the worldwide Medjugorje movement, as well as looking at how Medjugorje compares with Fatima, and what the successive local bishops of Mostar have said about it. The degree of trustworthiness of the visions and the visionaries is also assessed, as is the real significance of the Medjugorje "good fruits," and the reasons why it has been so incredibly popular.

noteworthy New Oxford Review comments5
The Synopsis above (in the "Reviews" section) is good, and I also found helpful the following recent review. On June 18, 2007, The New Oxford Review included these comments in their BookMarks section :

< Although the subtitle of Donal Anthony Foley's Understanding Medjugorje is "Heavenly Visions or Religious Illusion?" there is no question in the mind or writing of the author that the answer is "illusion." Add to that, fraud and deceit. The alleged visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in a backwater town of former Yugoslavia (now Bosnia-Herzegovina) since 1981 continue to attract religious thrill seekers in droves. What most Medjugorje pilgrims don't know, suggests Foley, is the sordid history surrounding the visionaries and the the religious order that has promoted the alleged visions over the past quarter century. Sexual scandal, ecclesial disobedience, an attack on the local bishop, and outright fraud are just some of the compelling reasons to question the authenticity of the visions and the motives of its promoters. Unlike previous slovenly-written attempts by other authors to expose the Medjugorje deception, Foley's offering provides an informative, compelling and persuasive argument to give Medjugorje a wide berth. >

Exposing the pious fraud!5
Author Donal Foley not only gives factual evidence against the fraudulent apparitions of Medjugorje but lays it out in simple terms for the lay person so that little doubt remains of the manipulation of various agencies to deceive and manipulate.
There is no other reliable research to compare with this authors expose!
