Sharp, sad and romantic, Dannie Abse's reminisces tell of the private fortunes of a Jewish family in Cardiff amid the troubled tapestry of the times. Abse's famous autobiographical novel captures the enchantment of childhood and the first poignant problems of adolesence. Abse skillfully interweaves public and private themes so that the fortunes of a Jewish family in Wales are set against the backcloth of the period - unemployment, the rise of Hitler and Mussolini and the Spanish civil war.

Editorial Reviews
Review
'Mr Abse writes beautifully and tenderly of the things he has seen and felt' The Times 'Acutely remembered, imaginatively told. Any but the youngest reader will be fascinated to catch the true ring of the thirties in a setting so different from his own. It is a clever, moving account.' Angus Wilson, Observer

Customer Reviews
This book made me want to be Welsh.
A fabulous tale of a young boy's passage through childhood painted against Cardiff in the grip of the second world war. It's as funny as it is poignant and will leave you with a warm sepia afterglow. It's a crime that Dannie Abse is relatively unkown, even in Wales, as he's a fantastic poet. Anyway enough guff, buy the book, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll probably wish you were Welsh, I did.
Bittersweet feel good fun
