CD Description
GRAND HOTEL was Procol Harum's first studio release after the departure of Robin Trower. The band had previously survived the loss of founding member and organist Matthew Fisher, and with GRAND HOTEL it was made clear that Gary Brooker's singing, vision, and leadership were essential to the band's continuity.
With the band's sound firmly established, newguitarist Mick Grabham fit right in on GRAND HOTEL. His playing on "Tojours L'Amour" sounds strikingly like that of hispredecessor. Throughout, the band's secret weapon is drummer B.J. Wilson, who possesses that unique character among rock drummers: a style of his own. Brooker's singing is as confident as ever, with "A Rum Tale" a real vocal show-stopper--part soul ballad, part Broadway classicism. This album ushered in the final era (successors EXOTIC BIRDS AND FRUIT and PROCOL'S NINTH are also fine efforts) of this evocative and powerful band.
