CD Description
DJ Alex Patterson is the Orb, but he is aided and assisted by the original techno-shamans, Steve Hillage and wife Miquette Giraudy (AKA techno duo System 7), and by such notables from the club-hopper gang as Jim Cauty (The KLF), Thrash, and Trevor Horn (of the Buggles, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Yes fame). The Orb's mesmerizing debut, ADVENTURES BEYOND THE ULTRAWORLD, rejuvenates the DIY ethic, revalidating the Eno credo of self-proclaimed "non-musicianship" via completely absorbing music created by record-spinners rather than keyboard virtuosos.
The ties with Hillage notwithstanding, Patterson and his cronies elongate the progressive rock sphere along channels that link it with the Teutonic trailblazers. ULTRAWORLD blends early Pink Floyd psychedelia with deep space and murky, trance-inveighed beats. Having already beenlegitimized by legions of admirers both under and over the influence), the Orb has literally paved the way for a "renaissance" of sorts for post-modern electronic music and precipitated an onslaught of music that shows no signs of receding.

Three Fluffy Discs4
Nice to see this album re-released. The Orb were one of the highlights of the early 90s, and it's easy to forget how much fun they were. Time has washed over the slick 'n' seedy aspects of the dance era and left a few classics - this album being one of them.
The standout dance tracks are Little Fluffy Clouds and Perpetual Dawn, both still fresh and funny. What is surprising is how much of this album is quiet, even 'New Age' in intention. Forget all the trendy booklet spin about being for 'chill out rooms', and punk name-dropping, this is Eno lite, with a smile on its face. Two 'classical' pieces (by Allegri and Steve Reich) get prominent samples too. The samples (aural and otherwise)are largely uncredited, something I was hoping for in this deluxe release. For example, the 'huge pulsating brain' title is taken from a description of 'The Core', a Blake's 7 sound effect from a BBC album that supplies many noises throughout the Orb's output. Even Pink Floyd get sampled at one point.
The bonus disc is superb - I dare say an even better album than the main one! The 21 minute Peel session is arguably the finest work the Orb have ever done, hugely entertaining. On the whole, a great set to revisit. Not their most perfect album, but hugely influential, and immesurably strengthened by the remixes.

A great value revisit to a classic!5
Fasten your seatbelts and prepare to head to deep space!

It's all here "Little Fluffy Clouds" and "Perpetual Dawn" - the two best singles The Orb ever released. That second side of disc one - thirty continuous minutes of ambient music par excellence. "Into The Fourth Dimension" - the best single The Orb *never* released and the prototype for the entirety of the overserious catalogue by Enigma. "A huge ever-growing pulsating brain that rules from the centre of the ultraworld (loving u)" - the best title song ever and in three amazing versions! A good version of Outlands - finally!

OK, so this music may not now be the most inventive or forward thinking ever released because the influence and quality of this album has enabled the genre to be improved upon with subsequent efforts by both The Orb and by other artists. Nevertheless as top-notch ambient excursions into space, the mind, the fourth dimension and other such wibble, it remains pretty darn faultless. To hear it digitally remastered is a joy and the bonus tracks are wonderful to behold.

It is also nice to see Island/Universal finally atone for their previous shocking reissues of this album, which have seen "Little Fluffy Clouds" retitled "White Fluffy Clouds" and used black and white photocopies of original artwork!

In short, this is probably more for previous owners of the album wishing to relive the good old days and explore those long-deleted Aubrey mixes without spending a hundred quid on eBay!

A Great Album5
I've got the original CD release of this and didn't really know if it would be worth getting this deluxe package. I'm glad I did. The remaster does improve on the original, this type of music does benefit from an improved recording. My favourite Orb album, this also includes the Peel Session track, (one of many bonuses on Disc Three), recommended.
