Stefan Kanfer was the first by-lined cinema critic for the New York Times, and is the author of the best-selling biographies Groucho and Ball of Fire: The Tumultuous Life and Comic Art of Lucille Ball. He has also written Stardust Lost: The Triumph, Tragedies, and Mishugas of the Yiddish Theater in America, The Eighth Sin, A Summer World, The Last Empire, and Serious Business. He was a writer and editor at Time magazine for more than twenty years. A Literary Lion of the New York Public Library and recipient of numerous writing awards, Kanfer is currently a contributing editor for City Journal.

Disappointing, hardly a biography
Buyer beware ! This is a very disappointing "biography". Having read Peter Manso's epic coverage of Brando's life which was excellent I was looking forward to this new book. Oh ! what a let-down. Each page was tedious and hard labour to get through. The author spends half his time relating the socio-economic state of the USA through the decades. He berates Manso's and other biographies yet plagiarises them shamelessly. This book is one big bore and how Stefan had the nerve to write it I do not know. There is not one fact in there which is new or not pinched from another person's work. Shame on him !
