Product Description

Sixty years have elapsed since the cataclysmic demise of Adolf Hitler and his Third Reich. In this book Tony Le Tissier (author of Berlin Then and Now) traces the rise of Hitler, the Nazi Party and its ramifications, together with its deeds and accomplishments, during the twelve years that the Third Reich existed within today's boundaries of the Federal Republics of Germany and Austria. The homes - or sites of them - of the dramatis personnae; the Nazi legends of their martyrs; the sites of the former Third Reich shrines at the Obersalzberg; in Munich; Nuremberg; Bayreuth, and in Berlin; the Hitler Youth schools and the Party colleges; the 'euthanasia' killing centres; the concentration camps, and much much more. Tony then follows the progress of Hitler's war: from the attack on Poland on September 1, 1939 to defeat in Berlin and the final round-up at Flensburg in May 1945. A final chapter covers the de-Nazification of Germany, the whole volume being illustrated by 'then and now' comparison photographs which are the central theme of After the Battle.

Fascinating detail on the origins, rise and fall of the Third Reich5
Books about the Third Reich are commonplace. However, Tony Le Tissier has used the familiar 'Then and Now' format to produce an outstanding contribution to the history of the 1933-45 period. This is a big (479 pages) and expensive book but it is essential reading for all serious historians of Nazi Germany. The scope of Mr Le Tissier's book is amazing; every aspect of the Third Reich is addressed in detail. I cannot think of one volume which would provide the reader with detailed information about the Feldherrnhalle 16 and the annual commemoration (in the period in question) of their deaths, of the homes in which Hitler lived (with photographs of each home, many of which have not previously been widely published)and of the building works of the Third Reich. Diverse subjects such as labour and welfare organisations of Nazi Germany and the post war de-nazification process are also addressed. Mr Le Tissier does not avoid the horror of the Concentration Camps and euthenasia programmes; these subjects receive the same detailed attention as others. Persons intending to visit Germany will find this volume an essential guide to the physical remains of the Nazi period. I recommend this book very highly.

Jon S5
As with all other After The Battle publications, this is an outstanding and also fascinating book. Tony Le Tissier has carried out a monumental amount of research and has illustrated it very well with the usual ATB format, 'then and now' photographs. Highly recommended.

Very valuable book5
A must have book if you're an interested person in WWII or third reich subjects.
