Customer Reviews
Good for the price
I was looking for a laptop to use for working from home and some personal use and as such it doesn't disappoint.
My previous laptop (or should I say craptop) was a Dell, and there's really no comparison. The build quality and screen of the NS10 is so much better, and it is generally quite pleasing to the eye.
I also believe that it would be hard to find similar specs (i.e. 250 gb hard drive and 3GB RAM) at that price from a "top" brand. The in-built camera and mic are also top notch, and using Skype has been an absolute joy.
Some negatives though: Sony has put way too much bloatware and unneeded software (with or without trials) on this laptop. It has taken me nearly a day to get all it all off and I'm still not happy (75 processes running according to the task manager).
This may also have something to do with Vista, which looks nice but is definitely a step down from XP - it takes more than a minute to load when you start up the computer! But I guess many other laptops will be having these same Vista issues...
Battery life is also a tad disappointing - it runs at just over 2 hours, with some power saving features on. Also the AV mode button, which is supposed to let you use Sony's Vaio Zone without starting up Vista, does not work. I'm not sure whether this model is supposed to support that function, but why include the button then? Speakers aren't great, but what do you expect from a laptop?
On the upside, the graphics card is better than expected. I have installed and played Call of Duty 2 with no problems whatsoever. Granted, it probably won't run more recent games, but I'm not a serious gamer so that's no problem for me. Have also not experienced the wireless problems as mentioned by another reviewer.
All in all, after getting over some small niggles, this laptop is a great buy - especially considering the price.
Nifty machine
Okay I'm not the best when it comes to laptops or techie things but I got this yesterday and I am pretty amazed with it - probably because I bought it to replace my old Toshiba laptop which lasted for four years and is ancient compared to this. The machine is well designed and sturdy and the resolution and sound are to die for (again this is compared to a 4 year old Toshiba!). The one thing that amazed me was the price - I expected to pay much more for this. Anyway all in all I am very happy with my purchase!
Wireless?????
This laptop has a problem with the built in network adapter which means that if you want to use it wirelessly it drops the connection after being shut down for a few hours and refuses to "see" the wireless hub when restarted. I spent an hour on line to technical support and then googled the laptop and discovered that there are hundreds of others with the same problem and that Sony are well aware of it. (God knows how many use wired broadband and don't realise it's faulty) Really poor stuff from Sony and the only downside to this otherwise fine laptop!
