Alessi - A Bird to Whistle At!
When I got this delivered I just couldn't wait to use it!
I have had this kettle now for over a year, so thought it was about time I did a review on it, seeing as though it is used so much and a while has elapsed after purchase. Wanted to see how well it really faired, as with kettles and pans I think a longer timescale is needed on which to review them.
Mine lives on the aga, and the conduction is excellent!
On searching for a kettle, I needed one that had a flat bottom, joking apart some kettles do wobble when put on a hot plate, thus taking longer to reach boiling point. Some kettles seem to spit water out from the spout and drip down the body of the kettle (this culprit being a le ... well I think you know which brand!)
The Aga kettle, well suppose that should have done the job well, but had to take it back to the shop as the base filled up with pit marks inside it, no not limescale but big pit marks that started to go through to the outside of the kettle.
Also there a lot of kettles out there which are ideal for electric/gas hobs but not for LPG agas (solid plates), so not just a quick trip to the local department store and hey presto job sorted.
Well back to this kettle in particular, easy to use, a delight to look at, stylish, sleek, sexy, sophisticated, yes I really am talking about a kettle here! Not an Italian male who just so happens to stop by asking me for directions, well I can live in hope!
The shape of it oozes style, as well it should as it is designed by Michael Graves for Alessi, interesting enough if you look at the American websites you can see that Michael Graves has done a few kettles for the American market, (one being the Ferris Wheel, these can be obtained from Target.com, but unfortunately they do not ship out of the US.
The boil time is very quick I have used this on both the aga and electric hob and it suits both perfectly. The handle a nice comfy shape does not get hot as some do, the lid easy to get off and the little bird just pops off, you could actually use the kettle without the whistle if wanted to.
The red little bird chirps out when the water has boiled, this bird can be replaced if needed at a small cost £7.00 approx. I have put a descaler ball in mine as we have hard water so does soon clog up if not.
Easy to clean, just warm soapy water and a good dry to keep it gleaming and shiny, and no it hasn't got any dents or scratches on it either!
This would look great on the hotplate in any kitchen be it a batchelor pad or family home!
I think you could safely buy one of these as a wedding present or anniversary for a couple and them get a gift that they will really appreciate, plus it would be a talking point in their home.
Pricewise a little more than your average kettle, but its style and design more than make up for that! Go ahead and start building more to it, there is a lovely milk jug and sugar bowl, pepper, timer and other items, just take a look at the Alessi site.
It's a lerve thang
I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I have fallen in love with this kettle.
It's sleek, stylish, brings my ordinary kitchen into quite a different league - sitting atop the range cooker it just gleams at me the minute I walk into the room. And I just love that little whistling bird. Everything about this kettle screams "own me". It's a lot of money, but putting it into perspective it's probably only the same as a good meal out or four takeaways. It's iconic, cool (when it's not hot) and gorgeous - everything I'd like to be but am not.
Oh, and it boils water too. Nearly forgot to mention that.
I keep looking at it
This is an expensive kettle and so I was quite hesitant to buy it for some time. I thought to myself, essentially a kettle is just a functional item to boil water in and actually there was nothing wrong with the kettle that I already had. However, I recently relented because for me the design of this kettle is iconic. Now it's in my kitchen and I like it so much that I keep staring at it every time I pass through.
As a functional item the boil time for water is quick enough for my liking although a little more capacity would have been appreciated. No doubt in terms of these specifications alone there are better kettles out there.
But the point of this kettle for me is that I really like the look of it! It's a piece of art in my kitchen which does something useful too. I'm really glad that I bought this kettle.
