Manufacturer's Description
The Archos 605 generation 5 portable media player comes with a convenient WiFi feature, an attribute that offers the fastest and easiest way to access digital entertainment. You can use the built-WiFi capabilities of the Archos to download online media content from the Archos content portal: All you need is a usable WiFi connection, and you're good to start downloading (fees may apply). With the Archos in hand, for the first time you can download favourite movies, TV shows, and music wherever you are, without being tied to the PC or Mac. Other great features include a full-colour 4.3-inch touchscreen that crams in an amazing 800 x 480 picture resolution for superior picture quality, 160 GB of built-in memory, and multiple options for additional storage (the player accepts SD mini and SD micro memory cards).

With full Internet access, the player's Opera browser plug-in offers Adobe Flash support, which lets you access and enjoy YouTube and other Web video sites on your Archos device. By using the player, you can view and post YouTube videos wherever you are with an active wireless connection. In addition to downloading media straight from the Archos content portal, you can stream and watch videos from your home PC or laptop. For added video playback versatility, the player is compatible with MPEG4, AVI, and WMV video files. The player features robust music playback features, too. On-board music file playback capabilities support MP3, CBR, VBR, WMA, protected WMA, and WAV files.
To help round out the player's multimedia superiority, the Archos even comes with photo viewing capabilities. JPEG, BMP, and PNG files are 100 percent compatible with the player, and the player can pull up PDFs for portable review -- an ideal means to take bigger documents or e-books in PDF format on the road with you. Because of the Archos's USB 2.0 compatibility, files can be quickly transferred to the device in the absence of a WiFi network connection. Charging the device can also be accomplished with an active USB connection. An AC adapter is sold separately for additional charging options. Other great features include mass storage capabilities, automatic firmware downloads, and a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. With an advanced Li-Poly battery, the player supports up to 17 hours of continuous music playback and 5.5 hours of continuous video playback. Weighing in at a scant 9.17 ounces, the Archos generation 5 605 measures 4.8 by 3.2 by 0.6 inches.

Customer Reviews
Awesome, but could be improved.
I love this device, it's a fantastic video player, and a fantastic web browser (although you have to pay for additional licences for web browser and some codecs)... the WiFi works so much better than some other devices I've used.... the file manager is pretty usable... and the music player is nice enough. I would easily give it 5 stars, but there are some imperfections.
1, No standard USB connector (need proprietary cable)
2, No bluetooth (so you can't browse on the move unless there is a hotspot)
3, As yet, the available plugins are very limited
I would be say that it needs a calendar, an email client, a notepad,
an SSH and/or RDP/VNC client and a few others at the very least
(These may be available as software updates, however)
4, I have seen it hand/reboot a few times unexpectedly.
Overall, I'm very happy with it, but it could do so much more.
Archos poor customer service
I read as many reviews if this product as I could find and it looked good. I decided to buy one and received it on 6th December. From first use it locked up every time when coming out of standby needing a full reboot or reset to get it working again. I phoned Archos support (on a premium rate number) and was told that it shouldn't work this way and someone would contact me the following week. Nobody did so I had to phone them again. This time I was told it would have to go back for repair and they sent me an email detailing what to do. When it came back it still had the same fault. To compound the issue it was not returned in the original box (in which it had been sent), the proof of sale was not returned (which they asked for and said would be returned) and the unit had been damaged while with Archos. It now has a dint in the back of the case which could only be the result of a reasonable blow.
I phone Archos again and explained the problem that had now turned into several problems. This time I was told this would have to go to head office and someone would contact me the following week. No one did. So, I have to phone them again. This time I speak to someone who unsympathectic, rude and offhand so I ask to speak with a supervisor or manager to be told 'no you can't' and 'you can hang on the phone all day if you want it will only cost you money, I don't care'.
This kind of support is appalling. If you are sold a faulty device the company should go out of its way to rectify it. I will never buy a product from Archos again and could not recommend anyone else to.
Oh by the way, it still doesn't work properly.
Very good and very bad
The good: I've had about 6 Archos players with various accessories over the years. There always seems to be nothing quite like them and in that way they are excellent. The 605 has a great display (I think the 504 actually looks better, but it is lower resolution and highly reflective) and what it does it does well. With a 160GB drive it holds all my music collection and a few movies for the train.
The bad: Every player I have had has had a problem (various bugs and faults) and every time Archos support has been appauling. I could write for hours on the imcompetence of their French technicians and the uselessness of the support infrastructure. One quick current example: the support number given on the website doesn't work. Yay.
Even so, I am now ordering another 605 (the last two proved to be faulty). As I said - there is nothing like it, but if there was I would not buy another Archos product.
