Customer Reviews

OK when new, but does not last2
When I bought this I was very happy, but after about 6 months I noticed that the enamel on the bottom was startting to chip off, exposing the cast iron underneath which then rusted. This was after normal, careful use - not banging it down on the hob or anything like that.

About 6 months later, I was heating it up on the hob when a large six inch crack appeared with a loud bang and small bits of iron flew off. It is not really usable any more which is unfortunate.

Good points - easy to wash, no need to seal, and food cooks well on it.

Bad points - not built to last.

A real Man-Pan.5
At last the boffins at Chasseur HQ have realised that the old design of this pan needed changing and have made steps in the right direction.

Ok, so it still weighs a tonne but you'll never get around that with cast iron cookware, therefore if your wrists/arms aren't strong I'd advise you to look elsewhere. No, the major improvement has come in the redesign of the handle, so gone is the bare enameled handle of yesteryear and in its place is a svelte maple wood handle that at least won't 'cattle brand' your hand, when the the pan is being used on the hob. This is the one thing that let the old design down for me, so I will offload my old one at a carboot sale and buy this instead. The trade off is that you cannot put it in the dishwasher but that's not a major problem as I have always found that handwashing this is best, as the dishwasher never seems to get it clean and is too corrosive on the grilling surface. As an added protection I always lightly wipe the pan over with vegetable oil when it's being stored, to stop any light surface corrosion that oft appears.
