Manufacturer's Description
The MicroLink dLAN Highspeed Ethernet is the first product to offer data transfers at up to 85 Mbps over the household power circuit. This new high-speed generation of devolo dLAN adapters now opens up a whole new range of possibilities. The new high-speed standard ensures that PCs can even exchange large files via the electricity supply without long waits. Even videos in DVD quality can be sent through the household electricity circuit. In combination with IP-TV, video on demand is an impressive experience anywhere in the home -wherever there's a power socket. The MicroLink dLAN Highpseed Ethernet is of course equipped with the tried-and-trusted DESpro encryption and is fully compatible with the popular MicroLink dLAN products with 14 Mbps transfer rates.

The end of my home networking nightmare.5
It's true. After months of trying to get a wireless network operational in my house using different routers and boosters, I've given up and tried the MicroLink dLAN Highspeed Starter Kit. The box blurb says "One Minute Installation" and "Easy Home Networking". For once it's not lying. This kit is really easy to setup and use and it's allowing my son at the other end of the house to use the internet. I just wish I'd bought this before trying wireless!

Stands above all other homeplug implementations.5
The devolo homeplug kit stands way above those offerings by Zyxel, Netgear, etc.

Firstly, not every user runs Windows. The driver CD (and website) both featured setup tools for Linux and MacOS X. The quoted install time of 1 minute is a bit overenthusiastic though - you would be hard pushed to have the software installed in that time!

Secondly, other manufacturers have produced homeplug devices that have cables to run the devices away from a plug socket, producing unnecessary wire clutter. These just plug straight into the socket. No trailing cables other than the ethernet cable. Let's face it, if you're using a computer, the chances are you're going to be near a plug socket anyway.

Thirdly, if you're worried about privacy or snoopers: Don't. The range is 200 metres across a single phase, and these neat little units feature encryption based on a key you set in the setup tool.

The gold standard of homeplug devices. Get rid of those trailing cables!

Great in theory, disappointing in practice2
Hugely disappointed that this product doesn't work effectively in my situation.
Easy to set up, easy to use, the product should have been ideal. But the connection speeds drop of dramatically when used in distant parts of the house, especially if on a different fuse at the consumer unit. We are in a modern house with RCD protected circuits, and I suspect the protection interferes with the dLAN.
I was getting reported connection speeds of only 8Mbps and 75% to 100% packet loss on a ping across the connection, when located in the room I wanted to use this in at the other end of the house. Put the units near to each other on the same circuit and they work as advertised.
Manufacturer's technical support blames the house wiring and can't help.
I thought these were going to be the solution to my networking problems, but sadly they aren't.
