Living in a Victorian terrace house, and having run a dehumidifier for the past eight years, I was in no doubt as to how much difference it makes to dampness and condensation. Our faithful old unit finally gave up on us and it was time to find a replacement. Knowing the importance of getting a good replacement, I didn't just pick the cheapest available. In fact the DEC180E was one of the most expensive. However, it was very well specified and is quite capable of maintaining the humidity by itself, or allowing you to take control. The unit's efficiency is proven by the four litre tank filling once a day!

If there are any criticisms, they would be the noise and tank removal. One of the reasons for choosing this model was the 'quiet operation'. There is no doubt that the unit CAN be quiet. Unfortunately, it also has the ability to be quite noisy too! This is usually caused by the case vibrating, and can be reduced by applying pressure around the case. Also slightly annoying is how fiddly the tank is to remove and replace, though this is probably to ensure it is secure.

    In all, a recommended purchase.

Surprised me - it really does work5
I bought this to try and help with the terrible streaming windows in our bedroom every morning. Despite central heating and pvc double glazing, we have never been able to stop this during the winter. Lately we have even started getting mould growing on the plaster around the window. We don't have a kitchen fan that vents to the outside and we do dry clothes in the house, both big sources of moisture. I have also read that an adult can exhale a pint of water or more during the night! This all adds up to a lot of water in the air with nowhere to go except deposit on the nearest cold surface. There are two ways to reduce this - reduce the moisture levels or raise the temperature. Not wanting to live in a tropical greenhouse, I finally bit the bullet and ordered this.

It is difficult to tell exactly what these machines are like when you look at them online. I was half expecting a flimsy plastic case with some indiscernable miniscule workings inside. So it was a very pleasant surprise when it arrived. Make no mistake, these Delonghi machines are chunky, solid, heavy, quality made bits of kit. It really is quite heavy, it's not trivial carrying it up and down stairs. It does come with castors.

The other thing that I was worried about was running costs. I have a small electronic measuring meter and running this through that reveals that when it is just circulating the air, it uses about 20w, but when the dehumidifier cuts in, it uses about 200w, rising to about 220w if you set the power to MAX (which just speeds the fan up). Put another way, that's one unit of electricity on your bill every 5 hours. Running 24hrs a day 7 days a week, that can start to add up...

Now when I first set this up, it was running constantly. I put it in the bedroom during the day, and move it downstairs at night (I would describe it as fairly quiet, but still too noisy to have near a bedroom at night in my opinion, especially if it is cutting in and out). Our house is a 4-bed detached, and it was taking about a tank-full per 24hrs out of the air. But after the first few days, now that the house has dried out a bit, it is doing much less in order to maintain the levels, and on a "bad" day now I only get about an inch in the tank. Other days, it does little or nothing at all, so running costs are acceptable. Even when the desired level has been reached, the fan still cuts in periodically, presumably to draw air through so it can get a better reading. The "target" humidity can be set from 30% to 80% in 5% increments. The general view is that 40-60 is a comfortable range. I set mine to 55 during the day and 50 at night (to make more use of cheap night rate electricity).

The results are obvious. The house feels "fresher", the air seems much crisper and more pleasant somehow, and the worst we get on our bedroom windows now is a slight misting, as though you've just breathed on the glass. Certainly nothing you could call a droplet! Most mornings they are completely clear. This a change from running water and puddles on the sill.

I was sceptical of the capabilities and worried about the costs (both purchase and running) but I needn't have been. I wish I'd bought one years ago. Brilliant.

A real answer to controlling condensation and damp!4
I bought mine some 4 weeks ago and I am delighted with my purchase.
I have a 3-bed ground floor apartment and either leave mine on during the night in the hallway or as and when needed. I didn't have a sizeable humidity problem apart from the normal condensation when cooking and showering but decided to get a dehumidifier after experiencing aches and pains in joints and being told by a TCM practitioner that a common cause of such problems is damp.
Various family members use dehumidifiers in their homes so I thought I would give one a go. The DEC180E works without any defects which is more than can be said for some of the other brands, going by the reviews I've read. It removes an incredible amount of moisture which is collected in a visible and easy to remove water tank (half a tray full/night = 9 litres!). The unit is modern looking so not too unsightly to have around the home (Italian design for you!) although I would have preferred the smaller DEM10 had it not been out of stock in practically the whole of the UK!
The only reason why I don't give this a top rating is due to its size, weight (although the pull up handles and castor wheels partly make up for this). This said I would not hesitate to highly recommend this model to anyone looking to buy a dehumidifier for their home.
Ps: The water which is collected is demineralised so it's ideal for use in the steam iron to avoid spitting and leaking!
