Julian Bream gives an excellent performance of the Concierto de Aranjuez. His playing is very precise especially in the first movement but he still manages to bring out the feeling that needs to be expressed in the beautiful second movement. This Concierto features the excellent Chamber Orchestra of Europe led by John Elliot Gardener. This piece deserves 5 stars. The rest of the tracks on the CD are also interesting though not up to the standard of the Aranjuez. On the Fantasia para un gentilhombre Bream is joined by the RCA Victor Chamber Orchestra led by Leo Brouwer in a very pleasant listenable piece. The remaining tracks feature Bream by himself in a selection of other Spanish pieces.
Inspiring Performance!
Julian Bream is a hugely under-rated artist and deserves more recognition than J.Williams in my opinion. I listened to Williams playing the same piece with Barenboim, but was unimpressed by his mechanical precision ( often mistaken by listeners and critics alike for his artistic strength ) and lack of emotion and tonal delicacy. He can not match the subtlety and richness of tones Bream produce and the soulful singing quality of melodie line. This recording of Aranjuez Concerto is a good proof. J.E.Gardiner provise brilliant and deeply-felt support with the orhcestra.
The Magic of Rodrigo
These incredibly beautiful classical pieces, composed by Rodrigo, were surely meant to be lovingly interpreted by the likes of Julian Bream. This music is the greatest, performed by the greatest It is timeless, ageless and sacred. You should own it and play it, then you will hear for yourself. It will add another dimension to your life; one of magical wonder.
