Excellent Value
Purchased in order to scan 35mm slides, choice based on the many excellent reviews. This is not my first Epson scanner, and as with all the others, I only use the Epson driver. Have never liked the packaged Epson software and no doubt the software supplied with the V200 will be no different. The driver, in contrast is excellent; it has 3 modes of operation according to the degree of complexity/control required. But even the "pro" mode is easy to use, provides great control, and overall, the results are stunning.
I either use the driver, ie Epson Scan, on its own, or use it in conjuction with my editor, Photoshop Elements.
Whilst not expecting a cheap scanner to be optically capable of 4800x9600, the results are particularly sharp and the colours are strong and true. The only criticism I could make is that one has to take care when inserting the 35mm slides into the frame. In summary, an excellent scanner at this price.
Exceptional Value
I bought this scanner primarily for 35mm slides & negs. It does a very good job - scanner software is comprehensive - particularly pro mode. I was a bit worried about the price - it seemed very reasonably priced (cheap!) - but it is just fine. Also works beautifully with Vista Home Premium - no problems at all with use or supplied software. The only possible fault is that the instructions are only available 'on line' - not as a download or even pdf.
Not perfect, but good value.
Like other reviewers. I bought this machine primarily to scan slides and negatives, and I have to say I'm well impressed for the money. Like a lot of computing-related equipment, you pay more for speed rather than quality, I find that at higher resolutions it can take about 10 minutes to scan 4 mounted trannies, but thankfully the 720dpi setting does fine, providing a file size of about 1.2-1.4MB, which is about as sharp as a lot of my slides are! Printing them to A4 size shows very good colour saturation and no pixellation at all.
It's not the most sturdy-feeling device, the film holder being particularly flimsy, but if you're as careful handling it as you should be your slides, it should be ok. I also think the supplied software, particularly the Arcsoft image editing kit is excellent, considering the price of the thing. In answer to the reviewer who complained about the layout of the machine, I'm right-handed and it sits easily on the right side of my desk, and I have no problems with it, indeed I would find using such a device on my left hand side very awkward.
Overall, 4 out of 5, I wouldn't expect to use it professionally, but for a home user or for a once only job of scanning all your old film onto PC, it does the job well.
