FinePix F100fd

The ultimate ‘F series’ digital camera.

Introducing the FinePix F100fd; following the long line of award-winning F-Series models, this is the most accomplished model in the range yet.

Combining a 12 megapixel 8th Generation Super CCD sensor a powerful Fujinon 5x wide angle optical zoom lens, a 2.7" high-resolution 230,000 pixel wide angle view LCD, the FinePix F100fd is one of the most sophisticated compact digital cameras Fujifilm has ever produced.

It offers the most advanced technologies available, including Wide Dynamic Range, Dual Image Stabilisation, Face Detection 3.0 Technology with automatic red eye removal and ISO settings of up to an unprecedented ISO 12800 - so missing great shots is not an option.

The graceful curves and slim arc design belie the complex electronics within the F100fd’s tough metal exterior. The unusual bowed design moulds perfectly into your hands and at a depth of only 23.4mm, it’s a perfect fit for a pocket or handbag and is available in two classic colours, Silver and Black.

FinePix F100fd Features and Benefits

NEW! Wide Dynamic Range.

The expanded dynamic range technology, adapted from the EISA Award-winning FinePix S5 Pro, has been brought to the consumer in the FinePix F100fd.

Through a combination of advances in Fujifilm's new Super CCD HR VIII sensor and RP (Real Photo) Processor III, this wide dynamic range dramatically broadens tonal capability and guarantees exceptional rendition of photos with both bright highlights and dark shadows.

This expansion of sensitivity captures greater detail, and subtle nuances of brightness and tonality that bring the photo closer to what the human eye actually sees, for example, helping to avoid the 'white sky' effect caused by the loss of fine highlight detail.

Powerful and versatile 5x optical zoom.

Highly regarded by both photographic and broadcasting professionals, FUJINON supplies the high-precision "eye" for FinePix. Using an aspherical lens to efficiently collect light at the focal point, the lens can deliver high-performance and phenomenal clarity within an image.  Despite the compact size of the FinePix F100fd, there are no compromises with optical clarity and speed of operation, so you’ll always be able to get closer to the action.

NEW Faster Face Detection 3.0

The FinePix F100fd is also equipped with Fujifilm's proprietary Face Detection 3.0 technology featuring automatic red eye removal to instantly find and correct any red eye from every face in the frame. After the shot is taken, the system instantly corrects red-eye as fast as 0.1 second and then saves both the original and the corrected image file automatically.

As with the original version of Face Detection, it can detect up to 10 human faces in a scene in as little as .035 seconds, even if the subjects are in motion. It does not matter if the faces are moving, tilted, turned or out of the center of the frame, the expanded range of Face Detection 3.0 will find faces in an instant and optimise the focus and exposure to deliver the perfect portrait.

Portrait Enhancer

The FinePix F100fd features a powerful automatic retouching system which gives skin tones a silky-smooth texture. By using Face Detection and preset camera settings, Portrait Enhancer minimises fine lines and small skin blemishes for smooth, natural looking portraits.

Once your friends and family have seen the beautiful skin tones produced by the Portrait Enhancer, they will never again hide their faces whenever you get your camera out!

2.7" High resolution LCD Screen with Micro Thumbnail view.

The FinePix F100fd features a bright 2.7-inch LCD screen which boasts a 230,000 pixel resolution, and has a reinforced glass coating for scratch-free durability and an anti-glare coating making it easier to see the screen in bright light when shooting outdoors.

The bright screen is coated with Wide View film, offering an expanded viewing angle that comes in handy for composition or for viewing and sharing pictures and can display up to 100 images simultaneously enabling you to use this micro-thumbnail view to immediately select specific photos to share with friends or to select to print all controlled from an intuitive navigation dial.

No more blurred images.

The FinePix F100fd features Fujifilm's Dual Image Stabilisation mode, which combines a mechanically stabilised Super CCD sensor with high ISO sensitivities, (up to an amazing ISO 12,800), for total anti-blur protection.

The combination of these technologies reduces the blurring effect of both hand-shake and subject movement even further to provide the highest quality digital pictures yet, with sharp, clean and clear results no matter what the shooting conditions.

Intelligent Flash with Dual Shot Mode.

Fujifilm continue the tradition of offering the user choice about lighting, and those who prefer to use flash will benefit from the FinePix F100’s Intelligent Flash system.

For those occasions when flash is required, the system sets the power output to achieve natural foreground illumination with balanced background exposure.  Avoiding both the messy background blur of 'slow-sync' flash, and the stark contrast of conventional flash, Intelligent Flash results in visibly more pleasing, natural looking photos.

With Dual Shot Mode, the FinePix F100fd quickly shoots two images in rapid succession – one with the flash and one without – and saves both. This convenient function lets users perform a comparison at their convenience and select the most pleasing image.

Special Scene Modes.

The FinePix F100fd has 16 pre-programmed scenes, including a special underwater scene mode for use with a special underwater casing and a Blog mode that automatically reduces the size of copied images for easy posting to a Blog, Web page or email attachment.

Simply choose a Scene Position that suits the situation and you have the ideal settings for everything from shutter speed and exposure to white balance at your fingertips ready to capture the image.

The display of helpful descriptions of each mode and Scene Position make it simple to explore the versatility of the F100fd when faced with any photo opportunity.

Continuous Shooting Mode and Movie Capture.

The F100fd allows you to shoot up to 12 frames in a burst* (at 5 frames per second), even if the subject is moving. This fantastic mode therefore gives you 5 times the chance of capturing that one special moment.
*at 3MP or lower

And when a still image isn't sufficient, the FinePix F100 fd’s movie mode, at 30 frames per second, captures movie clips with sound that are limited in length only by the size of memory card used.

    Awesome!5
    Very nice camera indeed.

Problem that other reviewer had is not on mine at all, the only possible thing is in bright light conditions, when you auto focus there is a bright line across the LCD but it does not affect shooting whatsoever. Been able to capture some stunning sunsets with this beast as well as using it's very nice macro function. Shots are clear and great quality, the new dial system on here makes life so much easier than having to have a sperate dial to choose which shoot mode you want, its all in one place! If you're looking for a camera with looks, quality of image, and is easy to use, this is the one you want.

More pricey than some point and shoots but it's worth every penny!

First shot I took (low light, indoors at night) I could see the pink banding problem!

Upgraded the firmware & I haven't seen it since.

I hummed and hah'ed becuase of the pink banding but now I'm very happy with my purchase. The images are really *really* vivid. I had a chance to pit this camera against my mates TZ (can't remember the exact model, but it's last years model)....the Fuji won in every photo class.

I'm not some happy snapper...I'm seriously into photography (have SLR & a host of dedicated lenses), so when I say I'm anal about this stuff....you can be sure that if I'm satisfied that I'm a tough cookie to please.

Only downside to date, is the 'wheel of fortune' menu dial. For example if you want to go to video recording mode & you happen to started turning the dial the wrong way, it can be about 12-15 clicks away before you get the mode you want!

In short...if you're hesitant because of thepink banding (like I was) - don't be. In real life it won't be a problem...& you'll simply just have stunning photos.

    Excellent for a compact camera4
I've been using the F100FD for a few months now as a second camera to my Nikon D40 DSLR. All compacts have limitations over DSLRs but all have one big advantage, they are pocketable.

    GOOD POINTS
    - Good picture quality for a compact. I think this is down to the better Fuji sensor which is a bit bigger than most compacts and has slightly better dynamic range.
    - Wide angle, 28mm equivalent is great. Probably there is some distortion but it doesn't bother me. Only a problem for techy geeks who take pictures of brick walls.
    - Auto mode great. I guess most people will leave it on auto and let the camera figure things out.
    - Face detect is nice feature and works well, as long as you give it time. After the picture is shot it blows up the face on screen which is very handy to check for closed eyes, odd expressions etc.
    - Nice build quality. Feels fairly solid but is still compact and lightweight. Recessed screen helps avoid greasy fingerprint problem.
    - Portrait mode takes out the wrinkles nicely. Unless your subject is really wrinkly don't use the portrait enhancer mode which overdoes the smoothing.
    - Manual mode. Not really manual but automatic with overrides. The override I like to use is to set the white balance to shady. This just warms up the pictures a little.

    BAD POINTS
    - Slow, as per all compacts. You have to give a moment or two to focus, set the exposure, detect faces etc. by half pressing the shutter release. Not great for action shots.
    - Zoom is not very progressive or smooth. In practical use its best to zoom to approximately the right setting and then take a step forward or back to adjust your framing as appropriate.
    - Its difficult to get used to the wheel.
    - No orientation sensor. This seems like a minor point but its a pain having to rotate your vertical pics all the time.
    - Battery life not terrific but sufficient for a few days shooting if you don't play with the camera too much.
    - 12MP not necessary. No problem though, I leave the camera on 6MP and can print fine up to 12 by 18 inches which is as big as I want to go.
    - Pink banding mentioned by some, but I have not seen it yet in 800+ shots. It seems not to be a problem, at least with firmware 1.02.
