Customer Reviews

Great picture quality, fast and quiet.5
I'd owned an HP inkjet for about 8 years which had provided fantastic service, and although not actually dead was suffering from creaking old age. As it had been so reliable I was keen to buy another HP.

Although this is quite a large printer, it's clever design means it can sit on a bookshelf (the paper tray juts out) as the paper is fed in and out through the front.

Set up was simple and straight forward. Print quality is excellent and on normal mode with ordinary paper photographs are surprisingly crisp with good colour. Print speed seems fast compared with my old printer and it is quite quiet. It has a mode to make it even quieter but I have not needed to use this feature.

Printing 200 copies I had a minor paper feed problem, time will tell if this is an issue. I am conecting it via the USB and running Windows XP Home. After two months I am extreemly pleased with this printer which just sits on my bookcase doing its job quietly and efficiently. Unlike my Magicolour 2350 EN colour laser which is a beast.

Actually a really great printer!5
There are quite a lot of reviews going round, about this printer - some of them positive and a lot of negative ones too.

I can say, though, this is actually a very good printer. I use it wirelessly which is pretty much flawless every time. The printer is fast and quiet but if noise levels are still a concern then there's a quiet mode button which means the printer will print slightly more slowly with little more noise than the sound of the paper passing through it.

Print quality can be a bit variable insofar as Fast Draft is perfectly ok for print-outs from the web and just about passable for letters but for anything else it's probably a bit to rough around the edges for serious presentation. That said, it saves ink. Fast Normal is a better mode to use but colours will be less vivid. The other print modes are superb but if you want to save gobbling up your cartridges, these two first modes will give you plenty of pages.

Envelopes can be a bit haphazard - there's a slot where you can insert them, so to speak, but that is prone to printing slightly skewed. I've resorted to using address labels which work substantially better.

Another unique feature this printer has is somewhat quirky. It's the ability to print on both sides of a sheet of paper. How this works is nothing short of a miracle. But printing this way can be slow - partly because once the printer has done one side, it stops to wait for the ink to dry before resuming. So if you need to do a big double-sided print job and get it done rapidly, it's probably best to do it the old skool way (print odd pages first then re-insert paper and print even pages) otherwise you'll be around all day.

The printer supports bluetooth printing which is handy if you want to print from a mobile device and also has its own web based control panel for administration if linked up over a network.

The bundled software is a bit hit-and-miss - in particular, some of the HP print utilities either don't work quite correctly or aren't worth the hard drive space.

But all things considered, it's a versatile and reliable printer and at the current price, a worthwhile purchase

Excellent features, but unreliable3
I bought this printer 6 months ago and I've been largely impressed with it so far.

The wireless capability works well - it was quite simple to install and never fails to work. The print quality is also very good. I mainly use it just for document printing, but have printed a few photos on the sample paper supplied with the printer and they are excellent. Automatic double sided printing is also a very useful feature if you're not in a hurry - it saves paper consumption, but does take quite a long time to print, since it pauses to allow the ink to dry on the 1st side, before printing the 2nd.

However (and here is the reason it doesn't get 5 stars), over the last 2 months, it's developed a problem where it suddenly thinks there is no black ink cartridge in the printer. I remove the catridge, clean the contacts, reinsert it and after numerous repeats of this procedure (sometimes I have to leave it overnight) it will suddenly recognize the cartridge and start printing again. Everything will be OK for a week and then it will happen again in the middle of printing. This is the original cartridge that came with the printer and it's still half full. This is very frustrating, since I'm often unable to print a document when I need it. I'm now looking at trying to get this repaired under warranty.

I've googled around for this problem "hp 6980 recognize black cartridge" and found a number of other people have had the same problem with this printer.

So 5 stars for the features, but only 3 stars overall due to the reliability problem.
