Portable HDD storage
I have acquired 10 Verbatim external HDDs over the years and they have all proven utterly reliable. It was because of this unblemished performance record that I decided to purchase the 500Gb version, the largest capacity in my portable HDD collection. The appearance of the black 'Special Edition' is completely different to the other models which have a metallic 'aluminium alloy' appearance. It is just a subjective impression but the black model is comparatively lightweight and would, I feel, not fair well if treated roughly. Durability is a primary concern for a portable HDD. However, setting aside the durability issue, this HDD has proven reliable. It is quiet in operation and stays relatively cool. A pair of blue LEDs, placed either side, monitors drive activity.

The USB cable that was supplied with the HDD failed within a couple days. I replaced this cheap looking, unbranded USB cable with a superior, gold-plated Lindy cable. I also purchased a separate hard case, with zipped opening, to keep the HDD safe. There is a pocket in the case for storing accessories such as a cable

The Special Edition, like my other models is bus powered; there is no need for an external power supply. The drive takes its power from the USB port on the computer. The case with HDD and cable inside is so light that it can easily be carried unobtrusively in a large coat pocket or briefcase.

It maybe small, but it packs a fair bit of power
I bought one of these recently, and I was a little wary before I bought it. There was only two reviews on it, but both gave good marks on it.

Plugged it into the back of my computer, and it worked brilliantly. I'm using it with a media player, so backing up my DVD's onto it. It does exactly what I want.

I feel confident on giving this a 5 star rating. The only thing I could say about it, is that you cannot transfer files larger than 4GB onto it - but I think I'm just being slightly petty, about such a fantastic little portable HD.

So far, so good
I've given 4/5 because it's early days and I haven't really tested it in any detail. Solid hardware, I prefer the brushed feel to my previous drive which had a shiny case and was therefore easier to drop. It fired up straight away when connected to my Macbook Pro. I deleted all the included PC files and partitioned into two 250GB drives, one for Time Machine backup and one for storage. So far it has worked fine.

The drive fits nicely into the Caselogic "small hard drive case" - if you put it upside-down behind the elastic strap the form factors are just right.Caselogic Small Hard Drive Case, EVA Outer, Black

I would definitely recommend this drive.
