A very sharp film scanner
To put this review in context, I have owned a few film scanners. A flatbed epson v700, a Nikon Coolscan V ED and this little plustek 7200i. When I sold the Nikon I realised after a while that I missed being able to scan film, but I didn't miss the hole in my pocket it left. So I looked around for a cheap dedicated film scanner and this Plustek is pretty much all that is about new. I had fairly low expectations based on the price. The Nikon was £500 - this was £135 (at the time)
First impressions: How small it is. It is about the size of a loaf of bread. The film loader sticks out to one side and you have to manually push it through but that is no great problem. The Nikon loader was automatic, but noisy as well.
Scanning quality: Excellent. Not only for the price, but at any price. Easily surpassed my epson V700 for sharpness and focus. I have scanned a few of the same images (my favourites!) on the epson, Nikon and Plustek and although the coolscan is best for colour, there is very little in it for sharpness. This is after all why you buy a dedicated film scanner.
Software: It's ok. I had no problems. I have installed it on an XP machine and on Vista and it works fine. Silverfast AI is quite good and the negative profiles are ok too. The dust and scratch software is clunky but very good. Compared to Digital ICE on the Nikon it has plusses and minuses. The minus is that it is not as automatic, the plus is that the preview is at 100% view so you can select a person's face for example and see the before and after effects of dust removal. I like this as sometimes it is easier to just take the slide out and blow it and press the preview button again. No complicated auto loading like on the Nikon. Please ignore the reviewer who was disappointed that the iSRD didn't work on some slides - that is the case for all infrared dust systems.
Resolution: The scanner is sold as being 7200dpi. The Coolscan V is 4000dpi. To put that in perspective, a 35mm scan at 4000dpi and printed at 300dpi (fuji minilab quality, not inkjet - they are different) yeilds a picture 12 by 18 inches. I don't think the scanner is 7200dpi. At 4000dpi I think the Nikon has more better resolution because it has an ED Nikon lens. At 2700dpi there is no difference. Don't be put off by this. 2700DPI prints 12 by 8 inches. Scanning bigger is there if you need it and your slide is good enough. For negatives you tend to hit film grain at 2700dpi anyway.
Conclusion - I didn't mean to write this much but there isn't very much information about this scanner on the web. Basically, it is a good buy and much better than the price suggests.
Impressive.
1st, this is an incredible piece of kit.
It works like a dream with both XP and (with downloaded drivers) Vista Home Premium.
It does take a little time with colour negatives but that's to be expected given the amount of work it has to do, and the quality sure makes up for the wait. I've been playing with it using the clean-up modes and the way it removes all the dust and assorted small marks is exceptional.
If you need a negative scanner then get this and you wont be disappointed.
Good Things Come in Small Packages!!!
Well...... where do I start?
We discover over 1200 family slides, dating back to as early as 1972 and decided that we really should try to digitise them before any further image depreciation occured.
The slides were in good condition and the Plustek 7200i made sure that these were easily transfered to a digital format.
I bought the 7200i after reading previous reviews for it and thought that for £159.99, it was reasonably priced to do the job at hand - It really was.
I had read that some people had had issues installing the software for the scanner, but I had no such difficulties.
I attached the Plustek 7200i to the PC and turned it on.
My Windows XP machine automatically recognised it as a scanner and I entered the CD to install the correct drivers for it.
The drivers installed promtly, and the Imaging software on the same CD also installed, though with a little lag (I started to worry!).
It was fine, it all completed and the last thing to do was install the Photographic Software which again on reading reviews, I opted not too.
I downloaded a trial version of VueScan which was fantastic as a demo copy.
It automatically recognised that I had a scanner installed and switched on and gave basic options for use, which at this stage were enough to get started.
I scanned 20 slides as a prctice before cracking on with the whole job.
The only thing with VueScan is that if you do not purchase it, it puts dollar signs ($$$$$$$) sparadically over the output image, which wasn't an issue as the output pics were still of startling clarity, and the eye natuarally focussed on the image as opposed to the dollars.
I was that impressed that I bought a full version of VueScan ($39.95) and used that to process all of the slides (without dollar signs)
Processing the slidesis simple........
Load the slide tray with 4 slides (or an additional tray come with the 7200i for negatives) insert into the scanner and press SCAN on the VueScan software, though there is a button on the macine if you use the software that comes with it.
This will scan and output the photo to your desiganted file location.
And thats it.............. simple!!

I MUST RECOMMEND THE VUESCAN SOFTWARE FOR USE WITH THIS SCANNER!!!!!!!!!
