Customer Reviews
a proper voice recorder
I'm using olympus ds-30 for almost a year now on a regular basis, for recording my lectures. I tested it under different audio settings and this recorder produces a great quality WMA files even at lowest Q settings. the best and most economic (in terms of battery life vs. quality) is the "normal quality" stereo, but mono is only slightly behind. When set to maximum audio settings, the effect is unbelievable! you can hear absolutely everything from every direction with incredible clarity.
The recorder starts up in 3 seconds and a large display shows all info very clearily. I never bothered to look at a manual and was able to figure out all buttons etc. within an hour of playing with it - it's very intuitive in use. There are quite a few options for noise cancelation etc. making it well adaptive to various conditions.
the only minus i could find so far in terms of sound is that it is a bit tinny, lacking in bass a bit. it really doesn't bother me though as the effect is not affecting the listening experience and every word can be heard clearly even when the speaker whispers at a distance of ~3m (small lecture room environment). the device feels and looks robust and so far i had no problems with its functionality, and i managed to drop it on hard floor about 4 times by now.
the application (provided) for transfering the files is rubbish and I personally don't waste my time using it and simply connect it via usb port and the device is recognised immediately and a folders' tree shows up in your window. All you do is copy the files etc. and basically use it as any file storage device (and also as music player). When using the application, I had (or it had) problems selecting files for transfer and I was never sure if my files where copied or not....
Despite that, it gets 5 succulent stars for performance and design.
BTW, a lot of people have mistaken it for a fancy mobile phone!
A useful item for a while........
Good device for simply recording thoughts and `to do lists', easy to use and the playback is very clear.
I haven't used in a lecture theatre so can't comment it performance in that scenario - but it does have a dedicated function for different arenas'.
Having indicated that the performance is good - before, you buy this product I would question you to think about how often you will use it?
Since buying this recorder I have downloaded an application for my iphone that does the same thing and since I always have my iphone with me it's more accessible, the Dictaphone has been relegated to the car for trip thoughts....
I rated it 4 stars for the ease of use and it does what it says on the tin.
