Customer Reviews

Superb scanner. No problems5
Thankfully I chose to ignore the other reviewer of this product as they are clearly reviewing the software that comes with the scanner and not the hardware itself. I have installed Silverfast on my Windows XP machines without any issues. If you want to use Windows Vista then as far as I know, it works, but Vista is a possibly the worst operating system I've ever had the misfortune to use and if there are issues, they're probably Vista issues, not Plustek's. You've been warned!
Anyway, back to the scanner. I scanned a few films using the Silverfast software with great results. However, it's not exactly intuitive and it can sometimes be a struggle to get consistent results as there is far too much twiddling to be done. I read the review of this scanner's sister product, the 7200 and followed the reviewer's advice and installed Vuescan and I've never looked back. Vuescan is just as powerful as Silverfast but it just works. Install it, run it and scan into it and you get perfect results everytime. The interface is so simple and it's kind of been dumbed down but that's what makes it so good. For example, accessing the infrared clean up settings in Silverfast gives you about 200 options and settings. In Vuescan you get a choice between none, light, medium and heavy clean up.
I have scanned 20 films from the 1970's with the scanner and it's like seeing the photographs for the first time. I recommend the scanner to you all, you won't regret it.
Tip. Buy an additional film holder. The scans aren't particularly quick so while you're waiting you'll be wanting to load the next negative strip ready for the swap over.
Update. 1500 scans later and it's still going strong. Have a look at the scans for yourselves on www.watsonbowles.co.uk

Bill5
I read the reviews and found them generally very useful. When it arrived (jan 09)I noticed that the software 'Silverfast' appeared to be updated. I took what felt like a risk and installed it. It works well and I have not bothered with Vuescan. I found there was a learning curve and some of the settings needed to be understood. All in all I am very pleased. The most useful tip from other reviews was to buy another set of slide racks.

Good product4
I also bought this scanner after looking at many other reviews. It's a very good -sturdy, compact & with a decent case and leads. I'll use it to scan & collate a collection of thousands of 35m slides - yes, time consuming. I've tested it with a few good ones (Ektachrome 25 using tripod, etc)and found some useful info - the quick scan software gives slightly dull results and is really just for snapshots but OK and could be used with any selectable resolution and other software to enhance them. The Silverfast software loaded fine on my modern, but basic, laptop & Windows XP. It is overcomplicated but has an auto-enhance button which works very well. It locked up once when I overdid it for the PC's memory. Some scan times including some warm-up time:- 1200dpi-30 secs and OK for snapshots; 2400dpi-45 secs OK for general use; 3600dpi-59secs and best for good slides; 7200dpi-76secs but no improvement in detail over 3600dpi on these very good slides. JPEG gives file sizes from ~100kB to 4.5+MB per slide.
I've not used the ISRD functions - I prefer giving them a wipe!
