RODE have a reputation for making quality condenser microphones for recording studios and musical applications. A little while ago they turned their attention to the Video market and produced the truly superb VideoMic (RVM). This has been such a great success that they
ve now expanded the range and produced a true stereo microphone along the same lines. The build quality is excellent with an all metal case giving it a truly bomb-proof feel and again using a fully suspended design to keep camera noise to an absolute minimum. It utilises two capsules in an X/Y configuration to give true stereo recordings with good soundstage whilst still offering a high level of rear rejection and low noise. It
s powered by a standard 9V PP3 type battery. The Rode power LED is constantly illuminated green to let you know all is well and battery life is over 100 hours. There
s a switchable high pass filter to reduce unwanted low frequency rumble, and also a switch for 10db attenuation, useful for recording in high sound pressure level situations eg concerts, racetracks, train stations etc. It has a standard hot-shoe mount and the shock mount body is also threaded for mounting on a boom arm or tripod. The connection is via a 3.5mm stereo mini jack.

Customer Reviews
Not good on hot shoe
I imagine this mic is good on a boom or rod but it is not good on my HV20 hot-shoe.
It picks up whine from the transport acoustically and also picks up a hum from the transport mechanically.
So to use this mic properly you will have to invest in an extension lead and some sort of alternative support such as a rod or boom.
The supplied 'dead cat' windshield does a pretty good job of excluding wind rumble.
The Best Stereo Video Mic Available
I recently purchased a Rode Stereo Video Mic and used it for the first time for filming a village hall panto. The results where really good. It is always a compromise in situations like this and the sound can really be a problem as the producers don't want you getting in the way of the audience even though they want you to produce a professional dvd of the production and sound (if you let them) can be an after thought but my new Rode mic added to the quality I was trying to achieve.
I feel this is the best mic available to semi-pro videographers in situations such as this.
Excellent rich sound quality - but a little big on small camcorders
I bought this for my Sony HDR-XR520VE HandyCam. Works perfectly with it - except in terms of size. Putting the mic on the camcorder makes it a bit too front heavy and not easy to handle.
I bought the Rode PG1 Cold Shoe Pistol Grip and put the Stereo Video mic on their instead - which works much better though it does mean you have 2 things to hold while filming.
Sound quality is amazing - very rich, warm and clear sound. The mic comes with the dead kitten windstopper and this works amazingly well even in very high winds. Much more effective than the windstopper upgrade SENNHEISER MKE400 MICROPHONE WITH MZW400 KIT for the Sennheiser MKE 400.
