Manufacturer's Description
With ironing being one of the most unpopular household tasks and taking up a significant amount of time for the average family, it is little wonder that people are looking for appliances which help to streamline the task of ironing and leave themselves with more time to do other things.

Now, help is at hand, thanks to the Russell Hobbs 14659 Steamglide steam generator Iron, designed tol help you steam through your ironing in no time at all.

Styled in a brilliant white finish with blue highlights it has been designed to offer high performance and substantially reduce on ironing time, thanks to the selectable high steam output.

With 2400 watts of power, the Russell Hobbs Steam Generator Iron has a 80gm/min maximum steam rate and selectable continuous steam with LED indicator. To vary steam output, you can choose between low, medium or high settings.

The iron also allows you to vary the steam and temperature settings, for complete flexibility and has a detachable transparent large 1 litre capacity water tank, which again helps you to save time as less refilling is required. For even easier ironing, the iron has a ceramic soleplate, designed to glide over an array of different materials.

Should the steam generator not fit on the ironing board, help is at hand thanks to the anti-slip heat resistant mat that can be detached from the base and placed on your ironing board allowing you the luxury of placing the steam generator base on the floor whilst the iron is safely on the ironing board.

For removing wrinkles from furnishing fabrics, curtains or hanging clothes, without taking them down, the vertical steaming facility will let you do this with ease and if required, the Steam Generator can also be used as conventional dry iron.

Additional features include an anti scale function, and a 15 minute auto off function, which sends the base unit into sleep mode if the iron is on and not moved for fifteen minutes.

Not All Steam Generator Irons are the Same!2
I bought this for approx £60 but felt that it was no better than a good quality standard steam iron, and was far more troublesome, so I returned it for a refund.

The steam is pretty powerful but a bit irregular and there are no steam holes around the tip of the iron for help with the wrinkles around cuffs and buttons etc. Following heat up the iron needs to be primed by holding it below the height of the main unit and pressing the steam button for 30 seconds. If the iron is left standing for more than 10 mins (which can easily happen if I'm sorting the laundry, stirring dinner, answering the phone etc, then the priming routine has to be undertaken again. I found this a hassle and the noise really grated on me. Another annoyance is that the steam lock catch is awkward and doesn't always lock first time. A final negative - this iron uses scale filters that need replacing every 6 weeks or 6 months depending on how hard the water is, so this adds considerably to the total 'lifetime' price of the iron.

In the end I purchased a Philips steam generator at around £100 which uses a boiler an so doesn't need priming, is less noisy, and doesn't require the use of scale filters. The Philips has a much more powerful and regular steam output and a reliable steam lock which starts or ends the steam almost immediately.

After trying a few different irons via family and friends etc, I have come to the conclusion that it probably isn't worth getting a steam generator unless you can pay around the £100 mark right now in order to get the features and benefits outlined above.

Russel Hobbs 14659 Steam Generator Iron.4
This was purchased to replace my old steam generator which had (literally) ran out of steam and refused to produce anymore, so I had something to compare it to. On unpacking I was a little wary as the 14659 felt terribly lightweight and plasticky against my previous model and I thought there's no way it would be as powerful or perform as well as its predecessor. I was marginally wrong - the machine performs perfectly well (the only difference was the older machine gave a more powerful spurt of steam). As far as the finished result is concerned the Russel Hobbs was pleasntly surprising and it's name of "Steamglide" was totally justified. Even though the iron itself felt very light, it ploughed through denim jeans with ease and they were very quickly ironed. The machine has three steam settings and a variable thermostatic control and can be used just for dry ironing when required. It comes fitted with an anti-scale water filter and a spare is also supplied. A clamp is also in the box which will allow the steam unit to be affixed to the special steam generator ironing boards which are now available. The base unit also has a detachable heat plate which you rest the iron on when not in use - this can be placed on your ironing board and saves having to stand the iron erect to avoid burning the board cover. The only suggestion for improvement I could make was the water reservoir be a little bigger. If you're doing a large, all steam iron I can see the tank needing to be frequently refilled.

Overall I can thoroughly recommend this iron as great value and for good all round performance.
