USB/ firewire fine but eSata.... omg!
Bought this to go with my Dell XPS 345 running 64bit Vista. Out of the box, it worked fine with firewire and usb but that's not the reason l bought it. Not surprisingly, if you buy this you are paying a price premium for the speed of eSata.
When it comes to using eSata...omg. Expect to have some messing around to get it working with eSata. Took me some googling and fiddling with the system bios settings but l eventually got my pc to recognise that the Seagate drive was there using the eSata connection. Next problem. The supplied Seagate Freeagent software that works fine with usb/firewire does not work with eSata! It is pretty good software actually (use it to adjust drive settings/schedule backups/encypt files/adjust powerdown times etc). Only thing is, using eSata, the Seagate Manager software doesn't work. So, for example, the only way to powerdown the FreeAgent drive while the pc is still running, is to physically disconnect the power lead - not good! Seems like the problems are all to do with eSata not being properly sorted. Microsoft have the recognition problem flagged as a known issue. The main point is that Seagate are fully aware of these problems (just read their support forums)but seem quite happy to let punters buy the drives without making them aware of the potential limitations. Bit shabby IMHO.
I am by no means alone in having similar problems. If eSata is the main reason you wish to purchase, l suggest you do some research across the net before you commit. In summary good drive, nicely packaged, usb/firewire fine but although you do get the speed of eSata, there are a few irritating limitations in its functionality.
A product to avoid
I sincerely suggest this product is avoided. Having just received mine, and plugged it up as instructed, nothing happened. Eventually, I managed to get a USB connection, but nothing with Firewire. Indeed, since trying with this unit, nothing else works through my firewire either. The next morning, the unit failed to wake up at all, even though I could hear it whirring quietly.
Works great
Use it on an old XP desktop with 512 MB RAM and Pentium I processor via FireWire 400. Works fast and reliable. Only downside is the Seagate backup software. It does not recognize networkdrives. But I downloaded the free Mircosoft SyncToy which works perfect with the drive.
