average
I have swapped my n96 for a google g1 phone and I am so glad I have. There is nothing wrong with the n96 as such, it does so much but only in a very average way. Quality is ok, screen is okay, software is okay (with the exception of iplayer which is awesome one thing I miss on the g1). The one thing that I really did not like though was how slow it was, and I had the updated software.
This phone is for the nokia die hards and is okay for them, but my opinion is if you are a gadget freak like me you will be dissapointed.
Moving away from being a 'phone'
The fact that the network signal constantly drops out every other minute just sums up the usefulness of this contraption. My previous phone, the Nokia 6300, had either a 4 or 5 bar signal (Very Good to Excellent) everywhere I've been with it; even when I've been in tunnel underground. Yet with the same sim-card, I'm reduced to either a 1 Bar or simply No Signal throughout the day, which is particularly serious if I needed to contact someone in an emergency, or vice versa.
Software Update didn't help, the only way to go back to a one bar is to turn off the phone, remove the battery, place it back in and start up, which seems quite ridiculous.
The features available with this phone make it quite attractive as a mini-computer, some more appropriate than others, some compromised. The Navigation function, as an example, struggles to stream GPS data on my 1 bar signal, and doesn't work at all on no bars.
BBC iPlayer is worth a look - the phone also a built in 'stand', which is basically a thin piece of plastic on the back case. Handy for desk-viewing, but since so much dirt and dust has crept behind the screen, the experience is ruined.
Despite the decent battery life, this 'phone' is a complete no-no from me. An individual should have a phone thats reliable, an take knocks, and will last a long time. After just 2 months, I'm re-considering my contract.
Excellent feature set......but
Lets be honest, Nokia couldn't cram more into a phone if they tried hard, this is all and well but you can see where they have cut the corners. On the plus side is the GPS receiver (which you have to pay a subscription for to use properly) the massive 16gb memory (now sold my ipod!!) good solid sliding mechanism, excellent colour screen as Nokia are now using the 16million colours rather than the industry standard 262,000, all is looking good till you actually feel the phone itself, the back cover is that flimsy and creaky it seems like an after thought,it was the same on the N81,the front isn't so bad but the flat keypad takes some getting used to but the build quality on the N95 was far superior in my view, like i said you can see where Nokia have cut corners!!!!!!
