Brilliant little carbon fibre tripod
I bought this Giottos carbon fibre lightweight tripod both for photography and for bird watching, particularly through my Opticron Mighty Midget (MM2) ED scope. I'm delighted with it - it is both light weight and very easy to use in the field. The combination of this tripod (with a light weight 3-way head) and the MM2 scope is a super quality, versatile and stable outfit that weighs only around 2kg-2.5kg in total, even with a zoom eyepiece on the scope. This is ideal for travelling (we have weight constraints with our motorhome), for walking in the field and potentially also for flying, as the tripod is so compact. Whilst the tripod isn't cheap compared with the traditional alluminium variety, I wouldn't go back to my old one now! An added bonus is that the soft felted cladding on all 3 tripod legs avoids that frozen fingers feel in winter that you get from carrying a metal legged tripod around.
A great tripod for walkers
I spent ages looking for a sturdy, good quality tripod which would be light enough to attach to a rucksack for extended day walks. This is a perfect solution combined with an MH1302-652 ball head and strapped onto a Lowepro Primus sack. It's just so light that it comes out with me more often than not. Build quality is excellent. You do pay extra for carbon fibre but then you end up with something you can use frequently on walking trips rather than just when you are prepared to make a special effort.
