Synopsis
Lowbrow buffoonery hit commercial highs with 1994's DUMB AND DUMBER. This prequel to the slapstick favorite imagines the immortal meeting of the mindless when Harry Dunne (Derek Richardson) and Lloyd Christmas (Eric Christian Olsen) were high schoolers. After becoming fast friends, the pair of future dog groomers are recruited for a special needs class. Unfortunately, this class is not a radical educational experiment. Rather, it's a moneymaking scheme exploiting Harry and Lloyd's intellectual deficiencies. The conniving Principal Collins (Eugene Levy) has singled out the two clowns to boost special needs enrollment--a scam to bring more educational funds to the school. Collins plans to use those funds to supplement an exotic vacation with his mistress, the lunch lady Mrs. Heller (Cheri Oteri). When Mrs. Heller is put in charge of the class, a news staff student, Jessica (Rachel Nichols), begins to investigate. Using the witless duo for inside information, Jessica becomes an oblivious object of affection for her sources Harry and Lloyd.

Dumber, better!
I loved this film, it is exactly the manner in which to follow Dumb and Dumber - but why did it take so many years to do so? The actors playing Lloyd and Harry are perfectly cast, and the tag scene in the store has to be one of the funniest scenes in recent comedy. Buy it, and laugh much.
I watched Austin Powers after I viewed this, and didn't laugh once.
Could do better...
I went to see this at the cinema the day it came out as I had enjoyed the first film so much. This however was deeply, deeply disappointing. There are however some quite funny parts to it but it could never better the original. if you are planning on buying this on video or DVD, don't. wait till one of your friends gets it or rent it and you'll be glad you didnt buy it.
Not good!
Well, what can I say? I knew that is would not be as good as the first but this film was really disappointing.
It's not a patch on the first film. Too many badly cast actors made into new characters (which get annoying after a while) brought in and not enough of Harry & Lloyd. Same jokes from the first film with a bad plot intertwined with Harry & Lloyds meeting.
If it wasn't for Eric Christian Olsen who plays Lloyd I would have given this film 1 star. He is perfectly cast to play Jim Carrey's alter ego. His facial expressions and voice matches Jim perfectly. Just listen to his voice when in his dream he says "Make out contest" and the scene with the slushie ice drink.
I'm afraid that I cannot say the same for Derek Richardson's Harry. Overacted and stiff. Looks uncomfortable in the picture on the DVD cover. Not quite dumb looking enough.
Not a very impressive prequel/sequel.
