Product Description

The Raad ny Foillan, Way of the Gull, is a 96-mile footpath around the Isle of Man. Splendid scenery is encountered throughout, from the rugged sea cliffs and mountain moorland in the south, to the glens, beaches and dunes of the north. The route passes sites of historical interest, colourful fishing villages, historic towns and peaceful havens. Walkers will appreciate the Isle of Man's unique character, where the pace of life seems easier and there are no coastal caravan sites to sully the scene. You will enjoy the company of gulls and seals. The extraordinary variety of flora is a joy to behold. The walk is described in easy stages with suggestions for accommodation en route. Two other walks are described - The Millennium Way follows the ancient route of the kings from Ramsey to Castletown, whilst the Herring Way takes a traditional way from Peel to Castletown. These cross the hills of the island's interior and can be combined to give an interesting route.

About the Author
Aileen Evans, now retired after a career in teaching and book production, has enjoyed a lifelong love of the outdoors. She has climbed, walked, skied and camped in many parts of Europe and North America and considers the Isle of Man a favourite which continually draws her to return. She prefers to linger on a walk, allowing time to appreciate views, to enjoy flowers and wildlife, and delve into things of historical interest. Aileen has always enjoyed adventure sports and sampled most, including potholing, wild water canoeing and alpine mountaineering. She still particularly enjoys rock climbing and exploring little known places away from mainstream tourist areas. Recently, with encouragement from her grandson, she has taken to mountain biking. Memorable tours include cross-country ski backpacking in France, walking across the remote interior of Iceland and a trek to Iceland's North Cape, the Tour of Mont Blanc and Alpine Pass Route. At home in Lancashire, with her husband Brian and collie Meg, she enjoys her garden, particularly the visiting birds.

Fabulous route, average guide3
Starting with the path itself, The Isle of Man Coastal Path, aka Raad Ny Foillan, aka the Way of the Gull is an absolutely stunning walk. It is fantastically varied, from beach walking, to narrow cliff top paths, to heather covered moorland, to pretty glens, to old railway tracks. Even the least interesting sections (which are to be found on any long distance path), which on the Way of the Gull are a couple of long beach walks are enlivened by the fantastic wildlife.

So, if you are looking for a path of c 100 miles and have a week in which to walk it, this is definitely recommended.

I cannot be so unequivocal in my praise of the guide. It's OK, it's not terrible, by and large it does the job. However it has a number of weaknesses which are annoying rather than being major flaws. The author at times mixes up her lefts and rights. In comon with many other guides she is frequently over detailed in the easy sections and then lacks detail where it would be more useful. Also, the distances are inaccurate, as much as two miles out in the estimate for a day.

So if you do the walk (and I would certainly choose this one over, say the Cotswold Way) buy the book, but don't overly rely on it.
