Amazon.co.uk Review
Oh, the innocent days when the sexiest thing on television was Barbara Eden's hidden navel! In the classic 1960s sitcom I Dream of Jeannie, an astronaut stranded on a desert island discovered a bottle containing a genie--a shapely blond genie in scarves and diaphanous pantaloons. He sets her free, but she follows him back to Cocoa Beach, Florida, where her efforts to serve him only cause mischief and threaten his career in the space program. I Dream of Jeannie depicted the male fantasy of a beautiful but subservient girl--but this subservient girl was all-powerful and oddly willful in her attempts to serve. It all worked because of the leads: Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman went on to lengthy careers (later starring in Harper Valley PTA and Dallas, respectively), but arguably never matched the chemistry they had as Jeannie and Captain (soon to be Major) Tony Nelson. Jeannie, though naive and eager to please, always had Eden's intelligence and steely resolve lurking under her bubbly blonde surface, while Hagman projected a genuine decency that somehow made the potentially salacious situation seem innocent.

Still, the show would never have been more than a knockoff of the similar Bewitched (basically, the battle of the sexes with a magic twist) if Tony's secret hadn't been discovered mid-season by his best friend, fellow astronaut Roger (the wonderful Bill Daily). Unburdened by the need for decency, Roger could be the show's insatiable id, eager to use Jeannie for no end of self-serving purposes. Meanwhile, psychiatrist Dr. Bellows (Hayden Rorke) served as the show's perpetually flabbergasted superego, constantly demanding a rational explanation for all the madcap events around him. All at once the show's storylines--which had previously been dominated by Jeannie's desire for marriage--could wander in any daffy direction the writers chose. The result was deeply silly and utterly charming. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

jeannie fun4
I have been waiting for years for this to come out on region 2 dvd, my daughter a big fan of bewitched just loves it. The quality of the film is a little grainy but the laughs are just as good as ever, a very young Larry Hagman is just great. This is one of those shows i watched for years and it's great to be able to indulge especially at this price, hope they bring out season 2 and 3 quickly.
So if you remember and enjoyed Bewitched, have a 9/10/11 year old daugher and want some wholesome fun and a little trip down memory lane go for it.Oh and the music will get stuck in your head.!! Enjoy

Not as good as Bewitched, but still highly recommended4
If Harry Hill had been around in the 60s, he may have referred to I Dream of Jeannie as "NBC's answer to Bewitched, if the question was 'can you make a programme that's not as good as Bewitched?'"

I Dream of Jeannie is in many ways very similar to Bewitched, but unfortunately in every respect is just... not quite as good.

However, unfortunately there are only a finite number of Bewitched episodes. If you own every season of Bewitched on DVD already and have watched each episode numerous times, then the addition of this DVD to your collection will be a very welcome one.

I Dream of Jeannie is a quality and very entertaining programme that will provide many hours of enjoyable viewing. Also, there are enough differences in Jeannie to make it fresh even if you have seen all the Bewitched episodes.

The quality of the episodes is variable - some are not very good, while others are excellent. However, throughout it is much better than most programmes that are on television today.

The colourisation is absolutely excellent and really enhances and brings to life the episodes. The quality of picture and sound throughout are excellent, and the addition of the commentary for the first episode is a nice touch.

Overall, while it does pale in comparison to Bewitched, that is more because of the superlative quality of Bewitched rather than an adverse reflection of Jeannie. I Dream of Jeannie is still a quality programme that I would highly recommend.
