In 1977's hit documentary, Pumping Iron Arnold Schwarzenegger works the crowds, plots strategies for defeating multiple opponents, shares his parents' values with the press and inspires legions of admirers with his resolute optimism about the future. And all of this long before he decided to run for governor of California. Larger than life, though not necessarily larger than his rivals for the Mr Universe and Mr Olympia bodybuilding titles (especially a young Lou Ferrigno, hot on Schwarzenegger's competitive trail but much less interesting), he still comes across, at age 28, as a consummate politician, smart, likable, and crafty about exploiting others' psychological weaknesses.

The film still feels redundant (there's only so much beefcake the human eye will tolerate), but the emotional dramas--the unrewarded hard work, the unanswered hopes--are compelling. This 25th Anniversary edition includes a revealing 2003 interview with Schwarzenegger and a reunion of the film's bodybuilders and director. --Tom Keogh

Synopsis
This bodybuilding documentary from 1977 charts a 28 year old Arnold Schwarzenegger's attempt to be hailed Mr Olympia for an incredible sixth time. A big box-office success, PUMPING IRON inspired scores of men (and women) to look at their own bodies and in some way emulate Arnold's incredible physique and the determination and committment it requires to maintain it. The movie also, in no small part, was the spring-board that launched him into a hugely successful career in acting. Also featuring TV's original INCREDIBLE HULK star Lou Ferrigno.

Worth the wait!
I was waiting for this version to come out on Region 2 for the UK as only playback DVD's through my PS2. I found the whole 'film' great, especially the mind games between Arnie and Lou. The extras, especially Raw Iron etc. were worth the purchase price alone, with the whole DVD capturing a great mix of work outs, posing, and scripted storylines - highly motivational in my personal opinion. Never seen the VHS version, but apparently the DVD quality is vastly improved. Definitely a great purchase!

Arnold is Numero Uno!
Pumping Iron is an exceptional 'docudrama,'which explores the sub-culture of bodybuilding in the 1970s, long before its widespread acceptance into today's society.
You don't have to be interested in bodybuilding to enjoy this film.
The film isn't dominated by musclebound men training in the gym, but more the individual personalities of the characters and how they are portrayed.
The main focus is the Mr Olympia showdown battle between the already crowned 5 times Mr Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger and the dark Prince Louie Ferrigno (The Hulk), who is looking to take the title away from Arnold.
It's a must-have for bodybuilders or potential bodybuilders due to its inspirational qualities, but it's also a good buy for non-bodybuilding fans, who will find the story very interesting.
One of Arnold's best!
