Only in the eccentric minds of Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) and electro stalwart Boom Bip (otherwise known as BryanHollon) could a concept album about the life and times of John DeLorean become a fully-fledged musical reality. Featuring collaborations with Spank Rock, Yo Majesty and, bizarrely, The Magic Numbers, 'Stainless Style' is a hook-laden science-fiction odyssey, referencing Star Wars and myriad 80s influences, while retaining the pop sensibility of Gruff Rhys' projects and the innovation of Boom Bip's. Includes the single 'I Lust You', featuring Cate Le Bon.

My Own Life On Mars Moment
Now then folks, I'm of a certain age - early forties is all I'll admit to - and I like my music aged, preferably recorded sometime between 1978 and December 1989.
I was listening to Marc Radcliffe on Radio 6 in the bath like you do and he played this track...it was fantastic...I stopped soaping my duckie and thought to myself "hold on, I must have missed that first time around, I wonder who it is?" Well, you could have knocked me down with a bottle of Radox when he said it was the new single by a band called Neon Neon.
Intrigued, I checked Amazon and found that there was also an album. I bought it and I love it.
Some tracks are a little throwaway - I'm not to keen on the rap one - but the rest of the album is fantastic and suits me right down to the ground.
"Dream cars" is fabulous as is the previous single "Raquel", but my favourite is still that new single "I Told Her On Alderaan".
Most tracks sound like they should be on the soundtrack to Back To The Future. And, ladies and gentlemen, that is a GOOD thing.
Fave Album of 2008 So Far
I bought this on a recommendation from a mate. What a top record. Hey, if you are going to write a concept album about John DeLorean you had better make sure your ideas and songs are sound. This is just spot on! It gets the early 80's synths sounds absolutely right (and that is difficult in it's own right), the couple of R&B raps are brilliantly executed have a story to tell and engage with the hard electronic sounds, the other songs such as 'Dream Cars', 'I told her on Alderaan', 'Raquel', 'Steel Your Girl', 'Belfast' and 'Michael Douglas' are just glorious pop classics! 'I lust you' should be released for the summer club scene.
I know it's all done with tongue firmly in cheek but if you are going to release electro-pop of this standard, even as a laugh, please can we have some more of the joke!! Truly excellent.
disappointed
Being a big long time fan of Gruff Rhys/super furries and also having all the Boom Bip cd's, I was really looking forward to the collaboration of two high quality artists. I was very disapointed and despite repeat listens I find nothing here that holds my interest. The music is totally bland, retro and unconvincing, reminds me of the worst of the 1980's all lovingly put together on one dreadful cd. Totally uninspiring and most certainly the worst CD I have brought this year so far
