Customer Reviews
A pretty funny book,
Hiassen writes comedic books that look at the relationship between politicians, big business, and their impact on rhe environment.
In this book, a suitably suspicious theme park owner in Florida who models his park after Disney (in a knock-off-cum-wannabe sort of a way), decides to branch out into those condo development that focus on golf courses (or marinas or the like), only to have environmentalists get in his way and attempt to do him down.
Hiaasen's books are cleverly structured and written. I don't think you can read too many in quick succession though because you start developing compassion fatigue about the environment if you're not too careful (and his tendency to bash stereotypes like crooked politicians doesn't help -it can com across as smug, with him bashing an easy target and all).
AN ENTERTAINING, HILARIOUS, EASY READ!
I appreciate the way this author takes a problem that's in the daily news and weaves it into a story in such an awesome fashion. The easy-to-read style of the story may deceive some readers into thinking it was an easty "write," too. But it's obvious by the expert choice of words, characters, and plot twists that Carl Hiaasen knows his craft.
My hat's off to this fine author who weaves an uncanny story with all the elements that make for a great read: humor, excitement, realistic problems, likable kids, a happy ending ... and more!
Some say Hiaasen is a bit eccentric, but that's okay, some of our finest authors are that too. I'm a writer, too, and I've been called worse things.
Definitely worth the money!
Disappointed
This was and may probably be the last Hiaasen book I read. I am always looking for new authors and after reading favourable reviews of his books I decided to give him a try. The first few chapters were excellent and very funny, but whilst I believe you have to suspend belief up to a point, the further on into the book I got, it became less and less credible. In fact it became so unbelievable I could not read the last one hundred pages. This is very unusual for me. Very disappointing.
