Not *really* a standalone book
Anybody buying this book as a standalone novel will probably be a tad disappointed and not really know what is going on. For those who aren't aware this book is an expanded extract from one of the appendices of Danielewski's stunning "House of Leaves" novel, and is a series of letters from a woman who is resident in a psychiatric hospital to her son. It sort of works on its own but it works infinitely better as a part of the larger project. For those who already own "House of Leaves" (I'm something of a "HoL" fanatic and own four copies myself!) this is definitely worth a look as the letters have been expanded, but for those who haven't seen the other book you may be a little confused by this, not to mention depressed as it is far from an uplifting read.

I bought this because I'd enjoyed several titles on the 'Customers who bought this item also bought' list. It's a short, strange and clever, one-sided story of maternal love and a downward spiral into mental illness. Didn't think I was going to enjoy it at first but I did. A nice, but sad, change.
