Books I humbly consider noteworthy
TrainspottingTrainspotting by Irvine Welsh
Buy new: £5.00 / Used from: £1.00
One of my favourite books. A variety of narratives and voices expertly woven to provide brilliantly insightful tragedy, horror and comedy. Also the Scottish dialect, what more could you want?
Animal Farm: A Fairy StoryAnimal Farm: A Fairy Story by George Orwell
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £1.50
Probably the best written allegory ever. Must read for the same reasons as 1984. Incredibly important in terms of politics, history and popular culture.
1984 Nineteen Eighty-Four1984 Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
Buy new: £4.99 / Used from: £3.50
Absolute genius. This book is important to read, referenced often in popular culture, esp if you are interested in history or politics.
Dr Faustus based on the A text (New Mermaids)Dr Faustus based on the A text (New Mermaids) by Christopher Marlowe
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
Call me a dissident but this play is better than any Shakespeare. The only drawback is the use of latin (which I find annoyingly elitist) but the literary pyrotechnics outweigh this easily
The Color PurpleThe Color Purple by Alice Walker
Buy new: £5.00 / Used from: £2.24
This book is like an intellectually and spiritually satisfying chick flick. Strong female characters suffer and overcome in this really inspirational book
Wuthering Heights (Penguin Red Classics)Wuthering Heights (Penguin Red Classics) by Emily Bronte
Buy new: £3.99 / Used from: £2.23
*Starry-eyed sigh*. This is the best book EVER. Cathy is wonderfully caustic, feisty and intelligent and Heathcliff is irresistible in the Byronic hero mode. So often imitated, never equalled.
I'm the King of the CastleI'm the King of the Castle by Susan Hill
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
This isn't the most comfortable read but will reach out to anyone who appreciates the potential problems of childhood, such as alienation, isolation and depression.
Of Mice and Men (Penguin Modern Classics)Of Mice and Men (Penguin Modern Classics) by John Steinbeck
Buy new: £6.69 / Used from: £0.30
This is a childhood favourite of mine, an absolute classic. You'll laugh and cry and maybe even fall in love (Slim is the fittest fictional character ever...)
PornoPorno by Irvine Welsh
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
Sequal to Trainspotting. It's narrower in terms of characters, which is a shame but this is necessary, esp if you're dying to find out what becomes of Renton, Sick Boy, Spud, Diane & Begbie.
Poppy ShakespearePoppy Shakespeare by Clare Allan
Buy new: £9.09 / Used from: £3.00
Absolutely brilliant book. Tragic, funny and true especially if you know anything of the way mental health is dealt with in this country.
Reasons to be CheerfulReasons to be Cheerful by Mark Steel
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.27
I've lovingly nicknamed this book "my political bible". Watch history unfold from a squat in Brixton: politics, dissentry, Ireland, underground 80s subculture, The Clash etc.
Jane Eyre (Penguin Popular Classics)Jane Eyre (Penguin Popular Classics) by Charlotte Bronte
Buy new: £2.00 / Used from: £0.01
This semi-autobiographical work really picks up after 300 pages. Don't worry Reader, persist and you chest will heave from the romance & the strength of our heroine.
The Unbearable Lightness of BeingThe Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £0.01
Classicly post modern, to the point it seems almost cliched now. Much more enjoyable and insightful, I think, than the work of other textbook post modernists such as John Fowles
Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe (Penguin Popular Classics)Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe (Penguin Popular Classics) by George Eliot
Buy new: £2.00 / Used from: £0.01
Such a cute wee story. You'll love it if you want something sweet, short and undemanding. Just don't study the ideologies behind it like I've had to....
Netochka Nezvanova (Classics)Netochka Nezvanova (Classics) by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Buy new: £7.14 / Used from: £2.85
Fascinating and gorgeously told. With classic Dostoyevsky themes, this book is both beautiful and hideous and as a result, I can't help feeling like I've been robbed at knifepoint, as it's unfinished.
High FidelityHigh Fidelity by Nick Hornby
Buy new: £4.94 / Used from: £0.01
If you're a fan of the film then you'll love the book as much of the script is taken directly out of the pages. An insightful, observational & hillarious masterpiece for all music lovers
Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical RomanceEcstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance by Irvine Welsh
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
The first two tales are brilliant, the third I still liked but I couldn't help feel it trailed off a little (for a writer as punchy as Welsh). Definitely worth reading for the originality of the plot.
Misery (King Classics)Misery (King Classics) by Stephen King
Buy new: £7.99 / Used from: £0.29
*The* most terrifying book I've ever read. Absolutely brilliant: a real page turner and more addictive than any codeine based drug described in the book
Catch-22Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Buy new: £5.94 / Used from: £1.73
I laughed out loud in public (so everyone thought I was mad) as well as cried at this book. It's conjuring up of Rome is so vivid & I couldn't help falling in love with Nately and Nately's whore
The Virgin SuicidesThe Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides
Buy new: £5.59 / Used from: £1.17
The Lisbon sisters still haunt me and it disturbs me how much I can identify with them and their decaying, dilapidated residence
Beautiful LosersBeautiful Losers by Leonard Cohen
Buy used from: £8.35
Reading other books after this seems somewhat akin to infidelity. This is a strange, obscure, corrupt and beautiful work that has stolen my heart and imagination and refuses to give it back.
Paranoid: Black Days with Sabbath and Other Rock IconsParanoid: Black Days with Sabbath and Other Rock Icons by Mick Wall
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £1.06
Mick Wall at his best. It's an honest account of his life working in the music industry. Colourful and unglamorous
Journey's End (Penguin Modern Classics)Journey's End (Penguin Modern Classics) by Robert Cedric Sherriff
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £1.99
My favourite play. Tragic, comic and intellectually relevant. It gave birth to the satirical, anti-war, absurdist comedy 'Blackadder Goes Forth'
Psychoanalysis of FirePsychoanalysis of Fire by Gaston Bachelard
Buy used from: £12.40
I am not a big fan of psychoanalysis but I found this book very enjoyable and readable despite it's technical quality. Thought provoking still, despite its age
Picture of Dorian Gray (Modern Library) (Modern Library)Picture of Dorian Gray (Modern Library) (Modern Library) by Oscar Wilde
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £1.80
