One of my favourite books. A variety of narratives and voices expertly woven to provide brilliantly insightful tragedy, horror and comedy. Also the Scottish dialect, what more could you want?

Absolute genius. This book is important to read, referenced often in popular culture, esp if you are interested in history or politics.

This isn't the most comfortable read but will reach out to anyone who appreciates the potential problems of childhood, such as alienation, isolation and depression.

Sequal to Trainspotting. It's narrower in terms of characters, which is a shame but this is necessary, esp if you're dying to find out what becomes of Renton, Sick Boy, Spud, Diane & Begbie.

I've lovingly nicknamed this book "my political bible". Watch history unfold from a squat in Brixton: politics, dissentry, Ireland, underground 80s subculture, The Clash etc.

Classicly post modern, to the point it seems almost cliched now. Much more enjoyable and insightful, I think, than the work of other textbook post modernists such as John Fowles

Fascinating and gorgeously told. With classic Dostoyevsky themes, this book is both beautiful and hideous and as a result, I can't help feeling like I've been robbed at knifepoint, as it's unfinished.

The first two tales are brilliant, the third I still liked but I couldn't help feel it trailed off a little (for a writer as punchy as Welsh). Definitely worth reading for the originality of the plot.

I laughed out loud in public (so everyone thought I was mad) as well as cried at this book. It's conjuring up of Rome is so vivid & I couldn't help falling in love with Nately and Nately's whore

Reading other books after this seems somewhat akin to infidelity. This is a strange, obscure, corrupt and beautiful work that has stolen my heart and imagination and refuses to give it back.

My favourite play. Tragic, comic and intellectually relevant. It gave birth to the satirical, anti-war, absurdist comedy 'Blackadder Goes Forth'
