Synopsis
Atmosphere, Weather and Climate is the essential introduction to weather processes and climatic conditions around the world, their observed variability and changes, and projected future trends. Extensively revised and updated, this eighth edition retains its popular tried and tested structure while incorporating recent advances in the field. From clear explanations of the basic physical and chemical principles of the atmosphere, to descriptions of regional climates and their changes, Atmosphere, Weather and Climate presents a comprehensive coverage of global meteorology and climatology. In this new edition, the latest scientific ideas are expressed in a clear, non-mathematical manner.

New features include: * new introductory chapter on the evolution and scope of meteorology and climatology * new chapter on climatic models and climate system feedbacks * updated analysis of atmospheric composition, weather and climate in middle latitudes, atmospheric and oceanic motion, tropical weather and climate, and small-scale climates * chapter on climate variability and change has been completely updated to take account of the findings of the IPCC 2001 scientific assessment * new more attractive and accessible text design * new pedagogical features include: learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter and discussion questions at their ending, and boxes on topical subjects and twentieth-century advances in the field. A classic5
The number of decades this book has been in print speaks for itself - it is a classic in its field. Barry and Chorley manage to explain things clearly and simply, but without 'dumbing things down.' However, it does cover a lot of material, so if you're looking for in depth information on a particular topic or you already have a fairly good knowledge of meteorology you'd probably be better off looking in a more specialist textbook. As an intro to weather and climate though it can't be beaten - in fact it was coming across the first edition of this book that influenced me to study geography at uni.

mmm, plankton and fish4
Great. An 8th edition. It's a good book on Meteorology.

My favourite passage, which has remarkably made it from the 7th edition, is made about the naming of the positive phase of ENSO, and I quote "...locally termed La Nina - the girl - on account of its richness in plankton and fish."

Roll on the 9th Edition in which the authors will hopefully expand on this sentence!

Exceptional, well written and worth every penny!5
This book is incredible (as is its author). I really enjoyed reaidng it, and find Chorley's coverage of complex material enlightening, informative and most of all extremely interesting.

Chorley's style is like a father talking to his child, accessible and seductive. The sound of his voice resonates through my head as I read his work. He is an extremely accomplished author, whom unlike many scientists is easy to understand.

I can just say that this is the best book I have ever read, and I really admire the author's seductive style.
