Editorial Reviews

Review
Jane Matthews was born in Bristol in 1972, studied Fine Art at Oxford University and Art History at the Courtauld Institute in London. She was working as an artist in the television and film industry in London when she first went to Skomer for a week, as part of the Voluntary Warder scheme. There she met Juan, the Wared. Jane left London in 2003 and now lives on the island with Juan, their daughter Martha and about half a million seabirds. She paints, writes, takes photogrpahs, studies the Grey Seal breeding season and rarely misses London.

From the Inside Flap
Skomer island is a National Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a world-renowned bird paradise and home to the world's largest colony of Manx Shearwaters. It has inspirational landscapes and coastlines and dedicated volunteers.

From the Back Cover
"Skomer may just be THE quintessential wild island. Fabulous scenery, teeming with seabirds, and its very own vole! It's not 'cosy'. The corssing is often rough, and it's not difficult to get marooned there and have to experience the spooky magic of the night sounds of the shearwaters. Islands shouldn't be 'easy'. The should be special. Skomer is."
Bill Oddie, Naturalist & Presenter

"Of course nothing can beat the experience of being on Skomer and indulging in its many delights, but this read comes a close second. Choc-full of sumptuous photos and concise text, this book is compact, bijou and gorgeous."
Mike Dilger, Naturalist & Presenter
