Amazon.co.uk Review
You won't need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, even if you haven't experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There's a galleon's worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp's androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor's daughter). They set out on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he's made Pirates of the Caribbean into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews
easily digestable summer fluff
entertaining and likeable summer blockbuster thats great fun for all the family.it is a tad overlong but that is only real gripe
2 hours of fun, action and special effects as good as they can get
I liked this film mainly because of the action sequences and the special effects and photography. The story isn't particularly interesting but it never becomes boring.Disney have made films with better stories than this but neither they or anyone else has surpassed the special effects you'll see here. The bonus features are as good as the main feature and apart from interviews with cast and production staff you get to see things such as the journey of the ship "Lady Washington" ( a real old ship that was used in the film )on its way from california through the panama canal to the caribbean island of St Vincent where filming took place. This ship got caught in a real life storm and badly damaged on its way to the film set.
There are lots of extra features on the disc that you can look at on a computer too.
Don't read... buy, watch, enjoy!
What did I just say?
This film will make you fall in love with pirating and adventure all over again. Take my word for it... just buy it, and stop reading the reviews!
