DVD Description
The race to decide the democratic nominee for the 2008 US Presidential Election was by anyone’s standards a stirring moment in history. Although almost unimaginable only a few short years ago, it seemed likely that for the first time ever the nominee would be a woman – and a woman with impeccable political credentials. But that dream ride to the White House was not to be, because her opposing candidate for the Democratic nomination was another one for the history books, the young national Senator for the state of Illinois, Barack Obama.

It soon became apparent to observers across the globe that, while in any other year Clinton would have had the nomination sewn up, she had the misfortune to face a politician who is truly one out of the box!

So how did a man named Barack Hussein Obama, born to an American mother and Kenyan father get to this exalted position?

Phrases like ‘meteoric rise’ trip off the tongue when you begin to consider this 47- year-old, who only became a national senator in 2005. In three short years he has made an indelible impression on the world political landscape! This is his story.

An Injustice to the America Dream3
With the cheap price, there comes a nasty quality. It should have been expected.

His Story is an updated DVD detailing the election victory of Barack Obama, as well as his life as an academic and politician. Its running time lasts for under an hour, and to be honest, it only really scratches the surface on the big issues.

The true nature of the documentary is to explore the meteoric rise of Obama. It doesn't do this though. Instead, it simply retells his profound story. Lacking in conviction and unable to bring anything uniquely new or exclusive, the cheap price should fool no one, and a rental at best should suffice most.

His Story is for a beginner. If you've heard of Obama, recently because of the election and/or the inauguration, then this documentary is definitely worth checking out. But for the person whose Obama knowledge is acute and keen, then this DVD adds up to nothing. In other words, you won't know anything more at the end than you did at the beginning.

The bonus features are interesting, albeit too short. Senator John McCain's Concession Speech is one of the better concession speeches of presidential candidates in recent years, and I personally feel it does much to underline McCain's overall decency and sincere understanding that America can only go forward united, not divided. Barack Obama's Victory Speech, the one in Chicago from the night of the election, is filled with soaring rhetoric, magnetic precision, and a pledge of right and responsibility. To have both speeches unedited and played in full, will, in history, become something of a political antique.

Other bonus features are interesting but far too short. There is a featurette on the Clinton White House, assassinations of former presidents, the influence of first ladies, famous campaigns of the past, the original hype and buzz of Nixon V. Kennedy, and civil rights in the country and black power. Not one of these features lasts longer than five minutes; they are brief, messy with archive footage and feature no views from historians or commentators.

That said, I did learn more from watching the features than I did from watching the actual presentation. And that's the real annoyance of this DVD. It provides a brief overview, nothing more. To the fledgling student who has suddenly been galvanised by Obama but wants to know more, this DVD has its advantages. But for everyone else - the geeks who know his story, like me - this DVD is worthless, and a reluctant rental is the best advice I can candidly give.
