"Someday, when I am rich, I am going to invite someone from my travels to visit me in America". Brad Newsham was a 22-year-old travelling through Afghanistan when he wrote this in his journal. Fourteen years later, he's a Yellow Taxi driver working in San Francisco. He's not rich, but he has never forgotten his vow. This title is the account of Brad Newsham's journey through the Philippines, India, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa as he searches for the right person - someone who couldn't afford to leave their own country, let alone holiday in the West.

Customer Reviews
Love it - or hate it.
If you think the panacea of a desolate, undernourished, deprived (and most of all - deserving) youngster somewhere in the world is a visit to the US of A, this is the book for you. Each chapter is suddenly interrupted with a reminder of this premise - and boy oh boy what a treat this will be for the winner. I bought the book, despite reservations about the authors intent, but went unrewarded with the very amateurish and superficial style. I really, really had to abandon at the half way stage. If you want a travel guide - try The Rough Guide.
a journey to find a friend
The story takes us to many exotic locations but with one thing central to all the tales along the way is the generousity and diversity of people. In search of someone to open the authors eyes to a different world and way of living, in return the lucky person will be boarded on a plane headed for the United States. How to choose who to share the expereince with is a decision which provokes many lines of thinking of the auhtor. This book provides an interesting travel tale but with a very human core.
A fantastic Journey
What a wonderful, heart-warming story. Newsham is one of those authors whom you laugh with, cry with, feel lonely and homesick with and just enjoy being along for the ride with.
Brad Newsham sets off to Asia and Africa in search of someone to invte back to the USA with him for one month. The characters he meets along the way are fascinating and offer us a real window into their daily lives. I just loved the earcleaner from India and Tony from the Philippines. After his trip he choses one of the people he's met along the way (I won't spoil it), and it's a happy ending.
If you enjoy this, pick up All the Right Places by the same author. Just as good a read.
