Editorial Reviews

JASON WEBSTER, author of DUENDE
'Brad Newsham is a tremendously gifted and funny writer... This is a marvellous book'

From the Back Cover
'I am in exactly the right place, thinking, doing and feeling exactly the right things.'

This was the affirmation that Brad Newsham repeated daily as he cycled alone across the Japanese Alps to Mount Fuji, free to wander wherever he chose. But back home in San Francisco, life hadn't been so rosy: his wife had met someone else and wanted a divorce. He tried everything to change her mind, eventually leaving his job and buying a one-way ticket to Asia in the hope that she would miss him. It worked.and then he met someone else on a bus in Hong Kong.

One of the first wave of Western backpackers to blaze a trail through China and Russia, Brad Newsham travelled from the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the epic prairies of Mongolia in a journey that took him across Asia by bicycle, boat, bus and the Trans-Siberian Railway. With its rich and fascinating cast of characters, All the Right Places is classic travel writing at its very best from the acclaimed author of Take Me With You, a finalist for the WHSmith Travel Book of the Year 2003.

Customer Reviews

I was satisfied5
An excellent book that details the travels of the far east and Asia. I bought this book along with Richard Perez's "The Losers Club" and I must say, I was satisfied with each.

Another good book from Brad4
A very good book covering a journey through Japan, China and Russia. The book is set during the '80s when travel though China and Russia in particular was much different from today, so this adds a really interesting perspective to the topic.

Brad starts off in Japan, and has some very interesting encounters when in Hiroshima, which is a real eye opener in understanding how the Japanese have learned to live post atom bomb.

The final chapters which cover Russia are the best, when he meets a few people on the trans Siberian train, and decide to say in Russia without the correct visas etc.

A lovely read5
Whether you've ever travelled yourself or are just a fan of travel literature, this book is so well written and accessable to everyone. Newsham really takes you with him wherever he goes and shares the characters he met along the way with the reader so you feel like you know them yourself.

In the 1980's, Brad Newsham set off to Japan to get over the split with his wife. He spent the subsequent months cycling through Japan, being ill in China and "pushing it" in Russia. It's not preachy and "look at what I've done", and he readily admits that travelling can be some of the lonliest times of your life, but he writes with such a vibrancy that everywhere he's been I want to go now (yes, even Mongolia).
