Pulp horror
Keene's covering old ground for the horror genre and as a tribute to the old school stories, especially those from comic books, this novel lives up to expectations. In fact Keene even sets the book in the 80's to complete his revivalist approach. However, these attempts at misdirection do not mask the fact that 'Ghoul' is shallow and ultimately does not suspend the reader's disbelief. There are too many unlikeable characters and too many bad people in concentration. These factors make 'Ghoul' a very easy read, akin to Shaun Hutson, with the required amount of horror and gore, yet ensure 'Ghoul' is am unmemorable entry in to the genre.
Great book but bad ending
This was my first book by Brian Keene, but it deffinatly wont be my last! Brilliant charctorisation, I really felt for the characters, I hated Barry's dad for the way he treated him and his mother and I felt really sorry for the boys and the way they were treated by their parents. The auther did a brillant job of creating an '80s feel to the book, it's very hard to believe it wasn't written untill 2007.
The book focuses more on coming-of-age themes with the three main characters - Timmy, Doug and Barry than on horror elements but there are suspenceful chapters and the last chapter is very grusome.
The book is very good and difficult to put down. I would have given it 5 stars, but the ending (the epilogue) was awful, I don't mean badly written but it was just very sad and left me feeling cold.
Overall a really good read, I'll deffinatly be checking out another book by Brian Keene.
Least favourite Keene novel
I've read most of Keene's work including most of the limiteds and this is the only book he's written that I didn't enjoy. Its not just that I like his books. He's my joint favourite author along with Ricgard Laymon but I really struggled to get through this book. Not for me.
