Lancelot Hogben's little Gem
I have had a copy of this book by me for over 30 years and have only visited this site because I was thinking of buying an updated copy for my Grandson. I am self educated and I found this book outstanding for understanding maths, its historical approach seems to me to be the way learn the subject.
The only other book which has stood the test of time for me is "Mathematician's Delight" by WW Sawyer which is an easier read but doesn't cover the range of topics found "Mathematics for the million". I don't have much need of mathematics now that I have retired but I picked up the book again this week because I want to revise navigation for use on a Flight Simulator.
The only minor criticism is that some of the notations are a little old fashioned.
