Synopsis
Wilbur Smith returns with the eagerly awaited sequel to his thrilling Egyptian series. Following on from "River God", "The Seventh Scroll" and "Warlock, "The Quest" continues the story of the Warlock, Taita, wise in the lore of the ancient Gods and a master of magic and the supernatural. Egypt is struck by a series of terrible plagues that cripple the Kingdom, and then the ultimate disaster follows. The Nile fails. The waters that nourish and sustain the land dry up. Something catastrophic is taking place in the distant and totally unexplored depths of Africa from where the mighty river springs. In desperation Pharoah sends for Taita, the only man who might be able to win through to the source of the Nile and discover the cause of all their woes. None of them can have any idea of what a terrible enemy lies in ambush for "The Warlock" in those mysterious lands at the end of their world.

Unbeleivable1
I use the term unbelievable, to refer to the plot of this book, I am an avid Wilbur Smith fan, and have read all his works, often several times, When I tell you that this book took me nine months to get through, it may give you an idea of how it compares to his other novels.

It starts off with the now 156 year old Taita, the eunuch, having his 3rd eye opened allowing him to see another person's aura, upon his return to Egypt, he finds that the nile has dried up, and the land plagued by disease and pestilence.............oh and giant man eating toads!

On his quest to find the cause of this catastrophe he encounters the reincarnation of his long dead queen, has his manhood restored does battle with the cause of Egypt's problems, an evil witch who turns out to be some form of giant slug.................Oh he also finds the fountain of eternal youth and becomes 30 again!

Sadly all completely unbelievable!

Please dont judge the author on this work, he is much better than this

Tiresome1
I love Wilbur Smiths books, despite the odd turkey and his constant patronising drivel about noble hunters (after all the lion/elephant still ends up dead!) on the whole his books are great. After the superb River God, preachy Third Scroll and pretty damn good Warlock, i bought this to go travelling with, and frankly i was looking forward to it too. I was so, so disapointed, it is beyond bad. Simple 'written for idiots' sentence structure, appalling story line and frankly ludicrous characterisation left me wanting to bin it, as i did. The plot line about Taita finding a little girl, raising her and when she gets to her teen years, sleeping with her, made me very uncomfortable. I really wouldnt bother with this. I know he is getting on in years but i pray he doesnt leave the writing stage with this turkey as his legacy

WOW5
WOW, I picked this up on holiday in Turkey out of the Hotel "Library". NEVER read any of his books befor, but this was such a worthwhile read, COULDN"T PUT IT DOWN.
HAD to buy the whole series to read from the begining.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND. G. Phillips.
