An under-rated gem4
Company of Heroes ruined it for all the smaller WWII RTS developers by being such a successful behemoth that everything else looks a little silly along side it. Desert Rats vs Afrika Corps came out in 2004 so pre-dates CoH by some time, but it is still exceedingly playable even 4 years later. There are some excellent features, I particularly enjoy how vehicles that survive gain in experience, so it is worth your while ensuring that your favourite Panzer's don't take too much damage. The game has a slightly odd (and highly unnecessary) backstory / love triangle mixed in with the solid historic elements, and the voice-overs are diabolical (when playing the Axis missions I was fed up of being called Les Ferdinand, I believe they were trying to say Oberstleutnant), some of the accents will have you rolling in the aisles, but on the whole you don't take these too seriously when you have the campaign to play though.

There is a good deal of creativity in the scenarios, they aren't all just "go here, blow up this". I particularly enjoyed a situation where I was defending a base and had to repair tanks in the field and evacuate them. I also like the feature that allows you to play some follow up missions as "Blitzkrieg" which ports all your existing tanks to the next fight. It can be a little hard to tell when this is a good idea or not though.

Overall, this is an overlooked game that runs very easily on a modern PC. Crank up the anti-aliasing and the game actually looks pretty good. The sound effects are decent, the history appears solid and the scenarios are a lot of fun. If you are interested in WWII RTS then definitely check this out, it offers a different experience to the gloss of Company of Heroes and is a good chance of pace. Recommended.

Great tank RTS5
This game is more tank-oriented that its predecessor D-Day, which is probably to most people's liking. It also does that very well, the graphics are excllent as is the attention to detail e.g. the gun recoil and the way the vehicles all rock on their suspension as you roll across the desert and suddenly hit the brakes.
Can be quite challenging in places, which is good to teach you new things like the importance of digging in to defend or use your sappers; this also helps to stretch it out as it is otherwise quite a short game.
A bargain in this new series of packaging, Battle of the Bulge for me next then!
