The second book only fuelled my appetite for more.

A very entertaining and sympathetic take on this oft-told section of British History.

My favourite biography. A remarkable story and so beautifully told and keenly felt by Fraser. Yes she's rather too romantic in her approach, but how could you fail to be moved by MA's heroism?

I read this because I enjoyed the above, but actually found this a bit dull. Emma certainly had a fascinating rags-to-riches tale, but Fraser doesn't tell it with much inspiration.

'The most profound, wise and absorbing of English novels; above all truthful and forgiving of human behaviour.' What more can I say? This was the first classic I read and spoiled me for anything else.

A book that constantly makes its readers question the characters' motives; are they 'good' or 'bad'? They're neither; they're simply human. A mesmerising story that still remains vital and relevant.

The only Trollope I've ever read. Enjoyable, but too long and frustrating. Ultimately rather forgettable.

Marvellously tight and completely free of any 'padding'. The brisk light-hearted pace of the first half contrasts beautifully with the sombre tone of the finale. Reread and discover all Waugh's hints.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but it kept me glued to my sunbed for a week on the beach, as I couldn't bear to put it down. I loved the parallel between this family and the Plantagenets.

The second volume introduces a new set of characters, but Scott ingeniously has their lives affected by the events of the first book and throws new light on the whole story. Just as powerful as book 1

Austen's most mature, heartfelt work, but rather slow.

Scott's sequel to his magnum opus. A chance to see what happened to the characters, but also a delightful and heart-rending novel in its own right. A superb little gem of a book.
