Books I've read 1
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Book 1)Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Book 1) by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: £4.14 / Used from: £0.01
This was the first book I ever read all the way through, way back in 2000 when I started secondary school and had to travel on a train. I became infected with the incurable HP addiction.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2)Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2) by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: £4.49 / Used from: £0.01
The second book only fuelled my appetite for more.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) PaperbackHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) Paperback by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: £4.49 / Used from: £0.01
My favourite of the earlier books; I couldn't put it down.
The Six Wives of Henry VIIIThe Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £5.00
A very entertaining and sympathetic take on this oft-told section of British History.
Victoria's DaughtersVictoria's Daughters by Jerrold M. Packard
Buy used from: £4.50
Rather disappointing. Victoria's daughters all led very interesting lives and (unlike their mother) were sympathetic characters, but this book feels like merely an overview. I wanted to know more.
Marie AntoinetteMarie Antoinette by Antonia Fraser
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £1.95
My favourite biography. A remarkable story and so beautifully told and keenly felt by Fraser. Yes she's rather too romantic in her approach, but how could you fail to be moved by MA's heroism?
The Unruly Queen: The Life of Queen CarolineThe Unruly Queen: The Life of Queen Caroline by Flora Fraser
Buy used from: £2.72
An astonishingly juicy story! No royal or celebrity today could ever cause this much scandal. Some of it is so shocking that it's hard to believe it really happened! Engrossing.
Beloved Emma: The Life of Emma, Lady HamiltonBeloved Emma: The Life of Emma, Lady Hamilton by Flora Fraser
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.01
I read this because I enjoyed the above, but actually found this a bit dull. Emma certainly had a fascinating rags-to-riches tale, but Fraser doesn't tell it with much inspiration.
Athenais, the Real Queen of France: A Biography of Madame De MontespanAthenais, the Real Queen of France: A Biography of Madame De Montespan by Lisa Hilton
Buy new: £3.51 / Used from: £3.00
This was more like it! Hilton is a promising new writer. Another wickedly absorbing account of royals behaving badly, which ends up being surprisingly moving.
Middlemarch (Penguin Classics)Middlemarch (Penguin Classics) by George Eliot
Buy new: £5.59 / Used from: £0.89
'The most profound, wise and absorbing of English novels; above all truthful and forgiving of human behaviour.' What more can I say? This was the first classic I read and spoiled me for anything else.
Daniel Deronda (Penguin Classics)Daniel Deronda (Penguin Classics) by George Eliot
Buy new: £3.35 / Used from: £0.70
A bit long-winded in parts, but then very gripping in others. I fell in love with the world Eliot created and Gwendolen is possibly the most compelling character she ever wrote.
Anna Karenina (Penguin Classics)Anna Karenina (Penguin Classics) by L.N. Tolstoy
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £4.00
A book that constantly makes its readers question the characters' motives; are they 'good' or 'bad'? They're neither; they're simply human. A mesmerising story that still remains vital and relevant.
War and Peace (Penguin Red Classics)War and Peace (Penguin Red Classics) by L.N. Tolstoy
Buy new: £6.49 / Used from: £5.46
A book that defies categorisation. A huge 'warts and all' tome that is far from perfect, but has something for everyone. Few books can be so boring at some points or so utterly magnificent at others.
He Knew He Was Right (Penguin Classics)He Knew He Was Right (Penguin Classics) by Anthony Trollope
Buy new: £6.74 / Used from: £0.77
The only Trollope I've ever read. Enjoyable, but too long and frustrating. Ultimately rather forgettable.
Madame Bovary (Penguin Classics)Madame Bovary (Penguin Classics) by Gustave Flaubert
Buy new: £4.89 / Used from: £2.49
I'm not sure whether or not I sympathise with Emma Bovary, but who cares, when you can enjoy such exquisite prose?
Brideshead Revisited: The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles RyderBrideshead Revisited: The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder by Evelyn Waugh
Buy new: £3.15 / Used from: £3.49
Marvellously tight and completely free of any 'padding'. The brisk light-hearted pace of the first half contrasts beautifully with the sombre tone of the finale. Reread and discover all Waugh's hints.
Pride and Prejudice (Penguin Classics)Pride and Prejudice (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: £4.19 / Used from: £0.27
Not Austen's best, but perhaps her most optimistic. Could there be a more likeable heroine than Elizabeth Bennett? My favourite romance of all time.
PenmarricPenmarric by Susan Howatch
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £2.09
I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but it kept me glued to my sunbed for a week on the beach, as I couldn't bear to put it down. I loved the parallel between this family and the Plantagenets.
The Jewel in the Crown (The Raj Quartet)The Jewel in the Crown (The Raj Quartet) by Paul Scott
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £5.99
My favourite book(s) ever. A complete tour de force in every respect. The story is told so brilliantly and the characters are some of the most beautifully drawn that I have ever encountered.
The Day of the Scorpion (Raj Quartet)The Day of the Scorpion (Raj Quartet) by Paul Scott
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £1.25
The second volume introduces a new set of characters, but Scott ingeniously has their lives affected by the events of the first book and throws new light on the whole story. Just as powerful as book 1
The Towers of Silence (The Raj Quartet)The Towers of Silence (The Raj Quartet) by Paul Scott
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £2.85
Yet another dimension is added to the story and this book contains some of the funniest and most achingly sad moments in the whole quartet, seen largely through the eyes of an ex-missionary.
Persuasion (Penguin Classics)Persuasion (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: £0.64 / Used from: £0.01
Austen's most mature, heartfelt work, but rather slow.
A Division of the Spoils (Raj Quartet)A Division of the Spoils (Raj Quartet) by Paul Scott
Buy new: £6.99 / Used from: £0.50
The magnificent climactic finish and the best novel in the series. All the pieces tie together and the finale is breathtaking. It will seem impossible that these four books are the work of one man.
Staying onStaying on by Paul Scott
Buy new: £3.58 / Used from: £0.95
Scott's sequel to his magnum opus. A chance to see what happened to the characters, but also a delightful and heart-rending novel in its own right. A superb little gem of a book.
Mansfield Park (Penguin Classics)Mansfield Park (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: £1.79 / Used from: £1.45
A strong candidate for the honour of being Austen's best work. This is an extraordinarily well-written book. Austen's in total control and although nothing much seems to happen, so much actually does.
