Vin Diesel is no James Bond, and he doesn't want to be. That's why XXX announced Diesel as the adrenalin-junkie Bond of the PlayStation generation, copying the Bond formula so shamelessly that this action-packed silliness would be a Bond movie if it starred Pierce Brosnan. Reuniting Diesel with his Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen, XXX has an attitude (if not a brain) all its own, plucking Diesel's Xander Cage from his celebrity as an extreme sports renegade, recruited by a National Security Agency big shot (Samuel L. Jackson) to foil a nasty Czech villain (Marton Csokas) who's eager to depopulate Prague with remote-controlled biological weaponry. Toss in a sulky, sultry Russian agent (Asia Argento) and you've got extreme Bond-age for anyone who thinks tuxedos are passé. With a handful of eye-popping action sequences, XXX launched a movie franchise with a cool guy, another cool muscle car, and plenty of box-office sizzle. --Jeff Shannon
Synopsis
This amped action drama stars Vin Diesel as Xander (aka Triple X), a rebellious extreme sports star with a mission to defy authority and create anarchy. In the dramatic opening scene of the movie, Xander pulls an outrageous serious of stunts with the help of a band of similar-minded jocks, broadcasts the whole event live onto the Internet with a network of strategically placed digital cameras, and then avoids being captured by the squadron of police who pursue him. When Triple X is later taken into custody, Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson), a representative from a government agency, hires the chiseled athlete and turns him into a secret agent with a mission to travel to Prague and collapse a dangerous terrorist cell operated by Yorgi (Martin Csokas) and the seductive Yelena (Asia Argento). Triple X is quickly drawn into Yorgi's lair, a stunning chateau situated in the mountains that is equipped with every high-tech modern amenity imaginable, along with a sizeable team of extra-large Slav bodyguards, a laboratory staffed by top scientists, and an always-ready gaggle of gorgeous concubines. Nonstop stunts, pounding hard-core music, elaborate sets, and inventive costumes make this Rob Cohen-directed adrenaline overload a visually exciting, aurally engaging, highly entertaining success.
Customer Reviews
You're in the Xander Zone
At a glance it's more intense to watch in Blu-Ray, up-scaling to 1080p makes each explosion that bit more close to home. When you compare to DVD or closely study the image quality this fast release to Blu-Ray, you'll notice how there's a certain amount of dirt to it. The colours in some scenes seem to blur together specially in the nightclub scene, sometimes the DVD release seemed to look better. Good price, definitely not a buy as a replacement.
Xander Cage (Vin Diesel) turns out to be a hell of an action hero in this fast paced turbo-charged thrill-ride. A character he seems not to want to leave as he returns to us on the big screen time and time again as a man drawn to speed and destruction, all he needs is a decent story. Xander Cage (Vin Diesel) is an underground thrill-seeker, who believed he could escape any clutches from the law, he was wrong. NSA Agent Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) uses Cage to infiltrate a Russian crime ring who may be threatening millions of lives. It's Cage's job as an agent for justice to take down enemies in whatever way he sees fit. This may include super-charged cars and bikes; innovative handguns, entertaining gadgets and a large number of explosions.
With an explosive intro by the brilliant hard rock group Rammstein performing their ferocious song `Feuer Frei', you can only hope the rest of the film lives up to it. Definitely the action scenes create the best moments in this film, watching Cage create havoc on a motorbike only to find out it's all a set up is a brilliant if completely unrealistic idea.
I have to admit there are certainly some dodgy moments in xXx where you have to wonder why a whole scene wasn't just cut from the film. The whole idea that these Russian criminals would be plotting to poison a city of people is laughable, don't expect anything too complex to occur in this movie. It's definitely comparable to those all-out action flicks that were generally awful, with stars such as Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Vin Diesel had his first chance to be the main star in a film of his own; unfortunately he did take the blow up first think later script.
When we meet Cage, we get to see an awesome stunt involving a Car flying off a bridge into the abyss after Cage has jut jumped out and opened up a parachute. We then see the warehouse where he shows off the stunts he has performed and filmed and recognize many famous faces such as; Eve, Matt Hoffman and Tony Hawk, who apparently just hang around skating and BMXing in this place and enjoy watching ridiculous stunts.
Blu-Ray extras include director commentary, deleted scenes, special featurettes, "Adrenaline" music video, a sneak peak at xXx 2: The Next Level, the theatrical trailer and web links. The film is watchable in English, French and Spanish with optional subtitles in Greek, Dutch, Hindi, Czech, French, Spanish, Hungarian, English, Arabic, Turkish or Polish; Nothing much more then the original release.
If you ant an all out action flick and are hopefully not too bothered about an air tight plot then this is definitely one to see. This is certainly a suitable role for Vin Diesel to play and he knows it, it's just unfortunate that such a strange screenplay was used, there's potential for this character in the right script so watch out for Xander Cages' Return. Oh and I can recommend avoiding the first sequel.
