Customer Reviews
Excellent introduction, to the point and easy to follow.
A short and mildly technical book, whch nevertheless gives the complete beginner everything that they need to know. The musical notations are well explained and the accompanying illustrations are welcome. As a first introduction to playing the Bodhrán, it is competent without being condescending, which is evident in the mature approach it takes to discussion of various styles of play.
I'd suggest that the aspiring Bodhránii, however, feel comfortable enough with musical notation to be able to follow the examples given.
Anybody without a basic grounding in reading music may feel a little at a loss, but with a will and an intent, the examples are easy enough to follow.
If one thing is missing, it is the explanation of regional variations. The method used to describe variational play is through the use of the tipper, but a brief summary of styles from the counties would have been nice.
All in all an excellent book. If you are planning on taking up the bodhrán, it's a must have. If you just have a passing interest however, this book is not for you.
The 'must have' beginners guide for every Bodhranai!
I started off with this book, our recent competition winner received a copy with their new Bodhran, and we recommend it to every new Bodhranai who asks us for help starting out!
It's affordable, contains all the information a newbie needs to know, and takes you through some of the basic techniques and styles that you'll soon be "whacking out" once you've got the hang of it.
An essential additional to the bookshelf of all Bodhranii! Full marks, and good luck to the new Bodhranii among us, from Bodhraness Catherine!
