Bruford & Co on brilliant form
Fantastic to see this released. Pity it wasn't longer - sound and picture quality good. All the band are on great form - brilliant musicianship all round as you would expect. Camera work is frustrating at times for Holdsworth fans (like me) - the camera insists at times on focusing on the body of Holdworths guitar with just his picking hand on show, sometimes no shots during solo's, having said that plenty of Holdsworth's incredible technique and truly innovate playing - hat's off to the other guys too, especially Jeff Berlin on bass. By the time I got to see Bruford, Holdsworth had left, replaced by John Clarke, so it's great to have this record of one of the shows with Holdsworth on-board. I'm afraid I wince at Annette Peacock's vocals but that's maybe just me - still gave it 5 stars. Overall very hightly recommended - an awsome band at the height of their powers.
released at last
Hats off to Bill Bruford for getting this licenced from the BBC archives and released. I have had to make do with a 3rd generation pirate copy from vhs which is pretty poor quality. This in comparison is very good indeed. Presenter Pete Drummond has been edited out along with the student antics of shoving a custard pie in his face. The music clips haven't been touched but must have been remastered. Like the previous reviewer Paul B there are some annoyances especially regarding shots of Sir Allan Holdsworth's stunning guitar work. I was a great fan of this Bruford incarnation and a lot the music still holds up after all these years. Also check out the phenomenal Bass work of Jeff Berlin who also appeared on Sir Allans ill fated roadgmes album for warners. Great performances by all the band, but a must for all Holdsworth fans. Highlight are the tracks 5G and adios a la pasada with annette peacock.
Embarrassing geniuses go to college!
What an amazing band of virtuoso geniuses! What an embarrassing video! Bruford's early solo albums rocked quite a few boats, as did the U.K. album. Here we see Bill with the incredible Jeff Berlin on bass and the best guitarist on the planet ever, Allan Holdsworth, grease-shredding with ease. But, it's 1979, prog rock isn't cool, confirmed by Annette Peacock's Kate Bush failure. I'm a huge Holdsworth fan and I can only barely justify owning this video. There's not a lot of AVH, but plenty of BB so I just about ranked it a 4, but it's for prog-rock Bruford-Holdsworth nuts only. And Berlin - does Jeff Berlin have a following?
