DVD Description
This complete Dirty Harry box set contains each of the films (Dirty Harry, Magum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool), starring Clint Eastwood in the role that made him a household name.
"You've got to ask yourself a question: do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?" Dirty Harry provoked a critical uproar in 1971 for its "fascist" message about the power of one, as it also elevated Clint Eastwood to superstar status through his most enduring screen persona. Harry Callahan (Eastwood, in a role meant for Frank Sinatra) is a sardonic, hard-working San Francisco cop who can't finish his lunch without having to foil a bank robbery with his 44 Magnum, "the most powerful handgun in the world." When hippie-esque psycho Scorpio (Andy Robinson) goes on a killing spree, Harry and new partner Chico are assigned to hunt him down, but not before the Mayor and Lt. Bressler admonish Callahan about his heavy-handed tactics. Racing against a deadline to save a kidnap victim from suffocating to death, and unfeathered by the niceties of Miranda rights and search warrants, Callahan brings in Scorpio, only to see him released on technicalities. "The law's crazy," opines Harry ! in disgust, before taking it upon himself to ensure that Scorpio doesn't kill again. Directed in violent and efficient fashion by Don Siegel, with a propulsive score by Lalo Schifrin, Dirty Harry was the fourth Siegel-Eastwood collaboration after Coogan's Bluff (1968), Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970), and The Beguiled (1970). Critics at the time strongly objected to the heroic image of a cop's violations of a suspect's Miranda rights, forcing Siegel and Eastwood to deny that they were right-wing reactionaries. Magnum Force:
The second Dirty Harry movie, Magnum Force concerns itself with a vigilante group that has targeted notorious scofflaws for extermination. When a prominent gang boss or drug-runner is set free by the air-headed liberal courts, a covert group of "avengers" is soon on hand to blow the miscreant to bits. While detective Dirty Harry Callahan is no great friend of civil liberties, he is dead set against wholesale murder as a solution to legal loopholes. Discovering that all the killings have been committed by a .357 Magnum, Callahan suspects that his on-the-edge partner, Charlie McCoy (Mitchell Ryan), is responsible. But the answer is less transparent than that, as Harry learns almost at the cost of his own life. The Enforcer:
When a group of self-proclaimed revolutionaries threatens the city by the Bay, it's up to Harry to enforce the law. The city wants to pin the threat on black militants, but Harry isn't buying it. Unfortunately, his hunch will cost him his badge. So, when the terrorists kidnap the Mayor, Harry will have to use every tactic at his disposal to hunt them down. Like his newest partner, Kate Moore, providing him with inside help, and his connections on the street leading him to the final showdown at Alcatraz Island. Sudden Impact:
After a few of Harry's public performances in the line of duty bring him under fire, his superiors become uneasy and suggest he take some time off. When Harry's rest and relaxation continues to attract trouble, he is sent to the small town of San Paulo to investigate a homicide. It seems a body has been discovered by the Bay, complete with a ".38 caliber vasectomy". Harry's trip is supposed to be routine, but he soon finds that San Paulo is having its own share of similar killings, and Harry has a feeling that they're going to continue. The Dead Pool:
After Harry puts one of the biggest crime bosses in San Francisco behind bars, he finds himself in the unlikely position of public hero. Now the unwanted attention is attracting the press, angry hitmen out for revenge, and a killer who enjoys naming his victims. Harry will have to work fast to uncover the connection between the killings, as the list is getting closer to his own name. And Harry doesn't like being on it.

Synopsis
Veteran actor Clint Eastwood stars as inspector 'Dirty' Harry Callahan of the San Francisco Police Department in this iconic series.
In THE DEAD POOL a film crew place bets on which celebrities they think will fall foul of a crazed serial killer. In DIRTY HARRY, a tough, unorthodox police detective goes on the trail of a psychotic killer who's been terrorising the city of San Francisco. In MAGNUM FORCE, a police inspector has the grim task of tracking down a killer within police ranks who is cold-bloodedly slaughtering villains. SUDDEN IMPACT sees Dirty Harry investigating a series of brutal murders in a small town. The bloodshed continues with THE ENFORCER, in which an unredeemable individual who enjoys killing teams up with a group of psychopathic hoodlums.
Customer Reviews
Nothing wrong with shooting as long as all the right people get shot.
Seeing as how DIRTY HARRY was the first film I remember seeing (I guess I was about 8 years old....Thanks Dad!) I'm easily pleased when it comes to Eastwood's seminal cop series. However, even if I wasn't already such a huge fan, I would still be extremely impressed with the outstanding package Warners have put together for this re-release.
There is a plethora of refreshingly excellent new documentaries placed alongside all the extras duplicated from the previous boxset and feature plenty of fresh, insightful contributions from many involved in the films, including the man himself. There is a particulary good documentary looking at the impact of violence in films that has some very astute points to make. The real treats however for fans are the commentaries.
There are commentary tracks on each film, though the best are from those directly involved in the film-making process, rather than scholars or biographers. There are, alas, no commentaries from Eastwood himself and Richard Schickel's contributions do unfortunately prove a little dry, However the boxset is worth owning simply on the basis of John Milius's (as always) outstanding commentary for MAGNUM FORCE. His gloriously un-p.c.commentary track should have you laughing your ass off until the very end. Wonderful stuff. James Fargo, another gun fanatic (perhaps the best qualification to make a Dirty Harry picture!) provides another fabulous track on THE ENFORCER.
The box set also comes with the excellent feature length documentary, OUT OF THE SHADOWS and a host of other, non-dvd merchandise, including Harry's badge! No Smith and Wesson model 29 included, however. Overall, a wonderful box set that does tremendous justice to Eastwood's essential series.
Eastwood at his best!
Having owned the original Dirty Harry DVD collection which was released back in 2002,I was looking forward to this all new release and I was not dissapointed all of the original films have been given another re-master,not just the picture but also the sound has been given the dolby 5.1 remaster as well and if you have a surround sound system then eastwoods 44 magnum sounds just like the real thing!!.
As well as the original extras there is a host of new extras and commentarys plus the addition of a small hardback book, production notes,Callaghans police ID badge! and also a poster and limited edition art cards complete the extras, sadly though no .44 Magnum included!!!.
All in all Warner have done a excellent job of both the boxset, extras and also the re-master of the sound and picture of the Dirty Harry films and at under £29 then you realy cant go wrong.
This boxset is a must for not just Dirty Harry fans but Clint Eastwood fans as well.
You wont be dissapointed with your purchase.
Dirty Harry Cleaned Up
There's only one word to describe this boxset - gorgeous. The care that has been put into putting it together is phenomenal. For a start, all five Dirty Harry movies have been newly remastered and they look and sound brand spanking new (particularly Sudden Impact which gains new life).
Then there are the extra items. You get a replica of Dirty Harry's police badge (any kid who ever saw a Dirty Harry movie in the 70s or 80s dreamed of holding Harry's badge and throwing it away like he did at the end of the first movie.) There's a poster tracking how the Scorpio killer "bounces" Harry around San Francisco. There are mini-replicas of memos from pre-production including ones saying how Frank Sinatra is interested in playing Harry. There are lobby cards of the Dirty Harry movie posters, a bonus disc featuring a documentary called "Out of the Shadows" and a small book with lots of great photos from the five movies. There are also short documentaries on the making of each movie.
This one is for hardcore fans who love the Dirty Harry movies. I couldn't wait to get my hands on this and I was not disappointed when I eventually did. This boxset has been deleted now because of a row between the distributors and the Director's Guild of America, which is a shame as this is the best DVD boxset I've ever come across. If you see one for sale, pounce on it before it disappears forever. Highly, highly recommended.
