Product Description
Red Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum atropurpureum) - 20 Seeds
Worth knowing: Because of their kaleidoscope of colours displayed during spring and autumn, maple trees have become very popular plants. In March the maple tree shows red shoot-leaves, which will later turn green in colour and take on a bright red colour again in autumn.
Origin: The trees can be found in areas stretching from East to West Asia. Many maple trees species are also indigenous to Canada.
Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. The seed is already stratified. Place the seeds in a fridge for about 5 to 6 days and press them about 1 cm deep into moist cultivation soil afterwards. 10 to 12 weeks might pass until germination.
Place / Light: The Red Japanese Maple loves sunny to semi shade positions. To prevent the plant from producing brown leave tips avoid places exposed to direct midday sun.
Care: Water a lot and evenly. The soil-ball may dry slightly. Do not let the plant dry out during winter. From April until October the maple should be supplied with liquid bonsai-fertilizer every 4 weeks. Organic long-time fertilizer is suitable as well.
Winter period: Once spring shoots with 5 pairs of leaves have developed, they should be pruned back to 2 pairs of leaves. This means: Break off the buds from the second pair of leaves. Thus the plant produces a fine branching. Once a year a shape pruning should be carried out and dead branches should be removed.
