Product Description

A modern serial killer - hunting an ancient secret. A woman is left to die as the rebuilt Globe theatre burns. Another woman is drowned like Ophelia, skirts swirling in the water. A professor has his throat slashed open on the steps of Washington's Capitol building. A deadly serial killer is on the loose, modelling his murders on Shakespeare's plays. But why is he killing? And how can he be stopped? A gripping, shocking page turner, The Shakespeare Secret masterfully combines modern murder and startling true revelations from the life of Shakespeare. It has been acclaimed as one of the most compulsively readable thrillers of recent years.

Editorial Reviews

Review
'Plot twists worthy of The Da Vinci Code dominate this agile first novel from Carrell...this spirited and action-packed novel delivers constant excitement.' Publishers Weekly (starred review) "a gripping page-turner, an erudite account of contemporary Bard scholarship and the plays and poems that made Mr Shakespeare, whoever he was, the man he is today. Perfect" Daily Express "a hide-and-seek chase of murder and mayhem...Carrell omits [Dan Brown's] ridiculous howlers but follows his penchant for twists, turns and incessant violence" The Times "It's the Da Vinci Code on steroids and would be banned if it were an athlete... An intelligent, thought-provoking, highly readable and extremely fast-paced whodunit spanning four centuries" Daily Sport "her extensive research is both accurate and impressive" RTE Guide

Customer Reviews

Confusing Plot1
I bought this book as I am going to see Hamlet at Stratford quite soon, and thought it would be an interesting read. Like other reviewers I found the plot quite confusing and improbable. The misquote "glitters/glisters" was irritating - and the reference to Moses being placed in the bulrushes by Pharaoh's daughter!! From what I remember from Sunday School days it was his mother who placed him there. I did finish the book, but overall was very disappointed with the plot and ending.

Too many names!!!2
I really tried to enjoy this book as I like a good mystery, but please, too many names of non-characters to deal with, simply impossible to remember everyone's significance to the plot - Poor man's version of the Da vinci code.

Holiday Read4
Got this book for my holiday and I think its a typical easy read fiction type book.I particularly liked the Shakespeare theme and enjoyed all the various literary references.
Yes, the thriller part of the book is not its strongest point - but most thrillers are far fetched and require the credibility factor to be put aside. For a first novel it was fine, be interested to see what her next one will be about.
Read it with an open mind and you will enjoy - and yes it is like the Da Vinci Code but then if you cant beat em join em!
